Sit down, close your eyes and ask yourself: "where will my next thought come from?" "What will be my next thought?" And then observe

Actually I am Buddhist and regularly meditate. It started when I was suggested it by a doctor and led on from there. I think that's a pretty butchered understanding of the purpose of meditation, to be honest.

The point of meditation is to better understand the mind, and so it will always be working towards a goal of understanding the root of your though processes. To me, that sounds exactly like what you are describing.
