Depression and ADHD I'm not as familiar with (have had lot's of formal schooling on addiction) but from what I've researched, there is a clear component to both of these conditions being physical/neurological disorders as well - although they are severely over-diagnosed, in my opinion. The number of people who truly suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD are far less than the number of people who claim to.

An addicts brain after taking a drug increases the amount of receptors to accomodate for the extra chemicals like seratonin and dopamine, as to where a regular persons brain doesnt build those extra receptors if it takes drugs. I was on opiates for 9 months due to a shoulder injury and surgery. I could take 5 Norco10 at a time and not even feel it. They kept changing the opiates because they'd quit working after a few days. I finally just stopped taking the stuff with no bad effects.

My personal theory on why people deny mental illness is because they don't want to believe that some people are blameless for their mentality. They want to believe that because they are ok, or that they struggled with negative emotions and made it through without treatment, that everyone else should be able to do the same. They like feeling superior to people who don't - not willing to believe that they physically can't.

It's a classic example of people being blinded by their own perceptions of reality - unable or unwilling to see life through the perspective of others.

This is so true - just look at all the anecdotes from people like that in this thread. Most of them are along the lines of "they said I was an addict/depressed/bi-polar BUT I stopped being a pussy/manned up/used willpower, etc."

They don'rt undertstand that not all mental illnesses are of the same severity. Hell, even cancer can go into spontaneous remission, just like mental disorders. What works for one doesn't work for all.
