Sequel was utter shite and should never have been written. Would have much preferred to see a prequel with Jack, seeing as though he's the only character that the reader can actually relate to

Underated by those who havent read it, overated by those who have, tge first one I liked, it was great and gave a bunch of good concepts that paved the way for Star Wars, and had a great influence on the amazing Warhammer 40k. The second one was eh, seemed like a waste of paper, children on Dune begins getting weird, abd it gets into uncanney valley from there, but reading the firstonealone wont give gou enough info on the overall dune universe.

one of the Sherlock Holmes novels. Most of the Sherlock stuff is short stories, but there's one of the long book length ones called The Valley of Fear that's even better when it gets to the second half, the point of view from when the story started and doesn't even involve Holmes/Watson.

It's called worldbuilding and it's what makes fictional stories like Dune seem more authentic, they even incorporate real human cultural aspects, like some of the borrowing from Islam in some of the terminology, invoking 'real' things too. Ultimately and essentially the story is still actually about humans here on Earth, with themes that exists in the human condition here on this planet (ex. the themes of fate and free will in Dune).
