The point is that he shouldn't receive a heavier sentence because not only is his life fucked (not a very valid point necessarily, but that alone could make him turn to crime to make ends meet), but if he does actually want to go back out into society, a heavier sentence in the shit hole of a prison system doesn't teach him how to behave properly, it just serves as a platform to learn more about how to be a criminal and to get angry at the system and then lash out.
