Who here remembers LimeWire?

I was digging through old discs that I haven't touched in years and came across this bad boy from at least 12 years ago with what appears to be the full installer for the latest version of LimeWire. Should I run it, /b/?

I may upload this installer along with a bunch of old music to a torrent or online folder if the demand is there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LimeWire
"On October 26, 2010, U.S. federal court judge Kimba Wood issued an injunction forcing LimeWire to prevent "the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality" of its software in Arista Records LLC v. Lime Group LLC. A trial investigating the damages necessary to compensate the affected record labels was scheduled to begin in January 2011. As a result of the injunction, LimeWire stopped distributing the LimeWire software, and versions 5.5.11 and newer have been disabled using a backdoor installed by the company. However, version 5.5.10 and all prior versions of LimeWire remain fully functional and cannot be disabled unless a user upgrades to one of the newer versions"

And the very bottom. Very curious about what all these .jar files are for. Perhaps Limewire planted them in there as a ghetto way of playing back files without actually installing any codecs to the machine. Only reason I can think that they'd do this is to enable kids to run Limewire on the school computers without the need to permanently install anything.

Port forwarding may be in order. I remember from the days when I used to host servers at my house that they wouldn't work unless I forwarded a port to allow for incoming connections and I"m assuming it's no different here. I think the lesson here is that it isn't so much about the program you use, but rather the integrity of the network that it leverages. It's overwhelmingly likely that LimeWire v4 has huge security holes that make it impractical for everyday use, but it's fun nonetheless to see what these old Java programs can do. I enjoy watching retro technology videos on YouTube, so being a small part of reliving the retro experience for some people is fun for me.

I've found a program that I guess routes the messages through a proxy and allows you to continue using the older messenger app. It apparently has support for versions down to 5 and the version I've got is 8. Grave news,

Microsoft's servers do not accept requests from the older protocols sent out by outdated versions of MSN Messenger. I'd have to resort to some really wild trickery to get their servers to think I was using Messenger 2012 in order to allow a login from version 8. You can see the more detailed reasoning in the picture.

Napster was okay, really no different than any of the other p2p clients. It was the first big one so it was pretty lacking in features. I love that in my country people use ancient tools like this. Ares is pretty popular so they keep alive the business with their stupidity

I am sad to see this thread come to a close, /b/rothers. This is probably one of the best thread that I've seen in awhile in my return to 4chan. Everything just seems like really shitty left or right reposts and people posting porn in gore threads.

OP here, I was going to post for a bit longer but 4chan's servers shit the bed and gave me connection errors. I'll be back soon with another hit of digital nostalgia. Hopefully other people will post their old archives too. I had a lot of fun sharing my old memories with you guys.

Don't know if you're still here or not OP but you gave me some nostalgia and inspired me to dig through my collection of discs when I feel like it..
