I think it's a mixture of the chemicals and the lack of immediate negative consequences. Eg heroin is addictive too, but it fucks your life up in a way nicotine won't (at least not in the short term).

In your defense though, everybody is different and some people have a more addictive personality. Really it's like everything else. If you know yourself well enough and you don't over-do it you won't get addicted.
