They are different in many ways.
Some examples
- LoL requires you to unlock champions whereas in Dota 2, you get all from the start.
- Dota 2 has a few more mechanics than LoL, as the LoL developers initially dropped a bunch of mechanics from DotA they found unnecessary. Example: creep stacking, creep blocking, turnrate, stats dependent on strenght / intelligence / agility
Games of Dota generally take longer. Most of my games took around 30 - 45 minutes up to 1h, where most of my LoL games took around 20 - 30 up to 45.

Also, LoL seems to be more fast paced than Dota 2. Cooldowns are lower, spells, because of ability power, deal way more damage and are a real lategame threat, whereas in Dota, most spells deal less damage later on, even though a small amount of damage amp was added recently.

Also, Dota 2 has way heavier CC than LoL, with stuns lasting a couple of seconds.

Personally prefer Dotka 2.
