I'm slowly starting to accept that the Shark are going to starve, unable to sink their teeth into the Penguins

Oh well, great season anyhow. Matt Murray and the Penguins are having a much better series.
>>
>>688265939
Damned shame if Thornton can't finally get his Cup after all these years. But fuck, man, watching Kessel light it up is glorious.
>>
Also Con Smyth level Phil the Thrill.

I was really pulling for the sharks though, big fan of Pavelski.
>>
>>688265939
The game was on at work and I barley saw it but holy shit that Pens 2nd goal. Who was covering him, he was in front of the net for like 15 sec and deflected it in. Shitty D.
>>
>>688265939
We don't watch soccer on /b/ you dirty mexican.
>>
>>688266848
Praise Phil.
>>
>>688266749
Yea I'm sad for Jumbo Joe too. Can't deny that they're getting outplayed pretty bad right now though. Shame that this had to be the series where they decided it was time to not perform at the top of their game.
>>
>>688266749
Thornton plays like an absolute dick.
>>
>>688267557
>hockey
>playing like a dick
lol isn't that the point?
>>
>>688267264
To be fair to them, the Pens play a different game. They're faster, dominating the shit out of possession, and the Sharks just haven't adapted to it yet.
>>
>>688267831
No? He's unsportsmanlike as fuck.
>>
>>688268059
>>688267557
Don't see it at all. At all.

I do have an issue with how the refs don't seem to call fuck-all in the playoffs, though.

>>688267831
No, it's really not.

Man, he has tried to start shit constantly with the pens. Remeber that one clip of him randomly coming up to one of them just starts bashing him in the head with the hilt of his stick?
>>
Penguins fan here.
Whether we win or lose the cup, what are some opinions on Matt Murray?
I hear that he'll be replacing Fleury.
He's good, but he plays behind one hell of a defense.
>>
>>688269169
To be fair, everyone gets chippy in the playoffs. Thornton's just high-profile, so he gets a lot of attention. I think "Thornton is a poor sportsman" is likely a minority opinion.

>>688269233
Murray has impressed, though the last thing you want is to overreact to the small sample you've seen of him.
>>
>>688269233
Murray is a fucking beast. His defense is amazing, as well as his speed.
>>
>>688269468
Fair enough man, I honestly havent seen him play enough to honestly judge.

>>688269233
We could use him in Edmonton. We'd give you Yak or a 4th round draft pick.
>>
>>688269468
Kinda what I thought. A lot of people want him to replace Fleury. I think he should be played like the Blues play their goalies, and know you have two solid goalies most of the time.
>>
>>688269656
No way he gets traded off. Unless it's free agency, but I don't even see that happening.
>>
>>688269233
Looks solid but remember the hamburgler.

Depending on how the expansion draft goes though the Pens might not have a choice.

I have been a fan of the Sharks for a long long time. I was so excited to see them advance so far this year. Especially since I made some daring changes in my own life this year. I thought it just must be the year.
>>688267193
But yeah, the Sharks be playing like shit. I enjoyed watching Crosby be put into the Shark's bench. But...holy fuck, these boys gotta grow up. Drawing penalties like that.
The Sharks only realized that they had to put their whole hearts into the game in the third. The first and second, played like shit.
>>
>>688265939

"Slowly"

>series over before it started.
>>
>>688269656
You could use literally anything that's not another franchise/generational talent forward to squander. And you could give any number of broken franchise forwards in return!
>>
>>688267899
They do just fine when Hertl isn't injured. He's probably the Sharks biggest threat against a team with speed.
>>
>>688268792
Lol they recreated this in the movie Goon.
>>
>>688269778
>>688269904
You can only protect one goalie in the expansion draft. The Pens HAVE to protect Fleury because of his no-movement clause.
>>
>>688269233
Matt Murray fucking great goalie
>>
Tradition is very important to the Pens.

Capital and San Jose's long storied traditions of 0 Cups. Sponsored by Your Pittsburgh Penguins!

Also 15,000 days since the flyers won a cup. Shitty team is shitty.
>>
>>688269786
Yeah, Hammond was classic (lol Ottawa) overreaction to small sample size.

>>688270286
Fair enough, Hertl is pretty good like that.

>>688270336
Hahaha, that is such a stupid fucking rule. But it'll maybe, maybe finally get GMs to stop handing out NTCs and NMCs like fucking candy.

Pens fan here.

It's been a hell of series so far - every game has been close and had me spooked every time you guys get pressure going in our zone.

If it wasn't for Matt Murray being insane, you guys would definitely have our balls in a vicegrip.

I feel like the Sharks started off the game very solid. But then the Penguins broke them apart.
Start of the game looked very promising and even.. then slowly the Sharks broke down.
Up until the third period where they finally figured out that they had to play.
>>
>>688270549
Lightning are in the same situation. The expansion team will likely get one of Murrey or Vasilevskiy.

Vegas will be way better than they have any right to be year one.
>>
>>688270802
Anaheim?
>>
>>688269468
>small sample

But Jesus CHRIST it's the playoffs and the Stanley Cup we're talking about here. The best of the best.
>>
>>688270825
Nah the oilers won't. They clarified the rule you don't have to use a protection slot if the players contract runs out 16-17.
>>
>>688270786
As a Sharks fan. I feel like that's being nice.
Matt Murray has been insane, a very quick goalie. But the Sharks just can't deal with the pressure from the Penguins, their forecheck is brutual.
And they know how to handle almost every Sharks powerplay.
>>
>>688270660
Honestly I pity the Edmonton fanbase. All those amazing picks and the dipshit owners still can't get you a goalie, a blueline or functioning systems.

>>688270898
Shit yeah, the Lightning's goaltending situation is gonna suck.

>>688271037
The rules of probability still apply. Playing four rounds of the postseason is like a quarter of a season. The percentages can be very skewed in such a short time. These teams are very good, but sometimes the best team doesn't win since so much of hockey is random. Goalies, especially, can look awesome or like they suck depending when they get hot or go cold.
>>
>>688269468
Thornton is just letting his emotions get the better of him. If anyone is a poor sportsman here, it's Couture tbh.

I nearly choked on my drink laughing at his comments about Crosby.
>>
>>688271167
I'm pretty confident he'll waive or accept a buy-out too. He seems to have moved on from pro-hockey and is a pretty sweet guy.

>>688271242
It's very difficult to call.

It feels like we get the pressure first, but then you guys show up late in the second and the third period and it's just a barrage of shots on Murray/in our zone.
>>
>>688271340
>Honestly I pity the Edmonton fanbase. All those amazing picks and the dipshit owners still can't get you a goalie, a blueline or functioning systems.

It is frustrating, but somehow we have a pretty diehard fan base. We have sold out every game for something like over 7 years straight. It's weird.

>>
>>688271391
Yeah... I don't get what this whole "Crosby is cheating" thing.. by timing the puck drop? I'm sure being a pro player there is some kind of mentality. Either way that is hard for the public to figure out and does not make you look good. I've always liked Couture alot though.

I gotta say the one time that Crosby pinned Thorton against the boards though, and Thorton slapped his helmet off. It was deserved. And I've seem some videos just showing Thorton push him and not showing how Crosby was holding him on the boards.
I dunno why it all happened or what was going through either player's heads. But Crosby just tried to act innocent after.

>>
>>688271941
On the subject of officiating...

That is almost impossible for me to comment on this series. There have been so many calls missed that it's making my head spin. On both teams.

It's like they want to "let them play", but then they'll call some stupid shit that BARELY looked like a penalty. Shit is so confusing and frustrating.
>>
>>688271584
Yeah. I've felt that also. That the Sharks don't come in until later periods.
But they can't keep attempting these late game comebacks. It just doesn't work.
And the Penguins don't get tired. They're used to the playoffs, the Sharks are not.
>>
>>688272391
No official wants to make the "game changing call" in a Stanley Cup final series. It's stupid, but it's the way she fuckin goes, bubbs.
>>
>>688271941
Couture's comments are taken out of context. Every centerman in the NHL cheats on faceoff's it's a widely known fact. Andrew Shaw said Toews is the biggest cheater he's ever faced off against and they are on the same team. Couture was pissed because they were being inconsistent on what they let go in regard to faceoffs. ie Crosby was allowed to cheat his stance but the ref called couture out on it when he tried.
>>
>>688272259
Oh, we would have shoved Bettman in his entirely all the way up Chiarelli's ass.

>>688272729
This is true enough, but by not calling a thing they're changing outcomes too. On which topic, fuck Kerry Fraser forever.
>>
>>688267557
no he plays hockey.... im guessing you just started following the sport since 2005 lockout
>>
>>688272747
That makes more sense. I had been watching the way they face off abit and noticed some weird differences. None that I can really point out. But just different styles and the way one guy seems to get so much closer than the other. Faceoffs happen so fast though it's hard to notice anything. I used to play though and I know there are alot of ways to take a faceoff though.
So are the refs playing favorites then? The hell is up with that?

>>688272658

You know. I have this little glitter of hope.
That since the Sharks choked and gave up 4 games to the LA Kings afew years back.
That the black cat karma will manifest itself.
The Sharks do have the possibility of winning 3 in a row.
I don't figure the Penguins to be the kind of team to give up 3 games though.
>>
>>688265939

It's okay, the East is murderers row. Pens fan here, but if would have been the same if Tampa pushed through. The Sharks were not prepared for a team this fast. The Lighting couldnt even get to their net on a 6v4 powerplay when they pulled their goalie.

Bringing another cup home.

I hate to admit it. But I was really really happy when the Sharks beat the Blues. I grew up in Kansas. First hockey game I ever saw as a kid that my parents took me to was the Blues. I forget who they even played. But all of my relatives, all of them. Lived in California. And they got me into the Sharks, my family moved out to Kansas and I was always pissed because there was nothing I loved here. No real ice, the year round rinks that were all shut down. Fucking sucked. I became a fan of the Sharks back in the Owen Nolan days. Stopped following for awhile because they were not doing well. Broke my hand in highschool hockey and then broke it again and had to sit abunch of time out then got into roller hockey in college and most the guys on the team were Blues fans and they were dicks.. so I kinda grew a disliking.

Me as well. I'm a Bolts fan and I watched almost every game in the playoffs. All very deserving teams who have been playing great hockey. Each game has been super exciting. Bummed about my Bolts, but definitely saw the Pen's potential after game 2.

Honestly don't understand why everyone shits on the Penguins. Crosby's a great player - definitely not a "whiner" or anything like that (even if he USED to be). The team is good, and their fanbase isn't any more cancerous than any other team's. I was at a game and met a lot of cool people who were Pens fans.
>>

It wasn't taken out of context moron he's a whiny bitch and is mad because he's got a 40% draw rate in the most important series of his life.

Faceoffs don't matter. A single faceoff may matter in the moment, but faceoff win rate means nothing in the aggregate.
>>
>>688278247
>>688278607
Yeah it was difficult with Kansas not having a team. And with every other kid not even knowing what hockey was. With highschool ice hockey we used to have more rinks to travel to, to play in. But then once I got into roller hockey it was just Missouri over and over and over again. Theres noone else to play since rollerhockey is more rare. Our college made us a MAC court.. a multi area court with tiles that roller hockey could be played on, the team had to practice in a Skate City oval roller rink before. I got smart and moved my ass to Colorado though and play pickup hockey most weekends now. Now if only the Avalanche could start winning..

When it was snowing out and hot as hell out we understood more. But the indoor soccer players are different because they get to have walls.....

Faceoffs are hard as hell to read. Most the time I've just let myself move forward and tie up the guy so that one of my defensemen could come steal the puck. Easy play. Getting puck possession is what it's all about.
And you gotta communicate that stuff to your guys, there are little tells that the boys have between them that they'll know what the plan is.

I don't want Toews.. I don't know much about him. But there was a teenager during free skate with his jersey while I was skating about. Vancouver fans are pretty intolerable too.
>>
>>688280633
I was watching a special on the cup a few years ago when the Hawks were in their second cup run, and most fans could'nt even pronounce his name.

Haven't had too many run-ins with either. Maybe I just haven't seen it directly on the surface as much as I do with Philly haha.

Love from Canada, /b/ro.

>>688280891
I'll second this, although they've been humbled as of late. I can't stand Burrows. at all.
>>
>>688280462
As a pittsburgher I obviously agree. We are literally raised to hate them. It's like pseudo religion. That and Ohio obviously - what an awful place devoid of natural beauty.
>>
>>688281141
Sedin sisters tend to fuck edmonton over, and the fans are pricks in the game threads.

Calgary has actually had some great sportsmanlike fans as of late, but fuck the flames still.

I told you. An individual faceoff may matter. Given the choice, obviously you'd rather win a draw and take possession. But a team's faceoff win rate does not correlate at all with its goal differential or its performance in terms of wins or progress through the postseason. Faceoffs are not a predictive stat. They really don't matter that much in the aggregate; it's a wash.

Blues fan. Hawks are our biggest rivel, but for a while it was the Wings. I hated them so much, thought they should play Mein Kempf whenever they came out for the practice skate. Aggrevates now that they took them out of our conference right as they were starting to tank. Hawks are now the enemy and things are back to normal.
>>
>>688280462
I'm from Philly and I agree with you ;-;
>>
>>688281578
I'll remember it then.
>>
>>688281677
I don't know how many times I've seen the winning goal in the third period come from a faceoff lost in the defensive end. It's a huge part of the game and players are drafted and put out on the ice during important times of the game for only that reason. How many times did we see Crosby double shifted tonight in case the faceoff guy was thrown out?
>>
>>688281776
Blues are all good in my book, although Backes is a little questionable.

I was at the game where you walloped us 6-0 and the first jersey got thrown on the ice. I was dating the organ player's daughter at the time lol

That is amazing. Did you get free games out of it?
>>
>>688282329
Backes does get a lot of hate, but you would like him on your team. He used to throw some fits but he has calmed down quite a bit this year and mattered for once in the post season. I never understood the goon reputation though over other players that get suspended all the time.

Not a goddamn thing. Best I got was a tour of the catwalk. Met MacTavish and our radio guys. Caught a glimpse of Lowe.

They were all pissed off though, I actually think it was the same night that we got rekt by the Blues lol
>>
>>688282744
Oh, god yes I would take him in a heartbeat.

My dad, on the other hand, has no interest in him.

There are talks of getting Lucic to play, but I dont wanna pay 6 mil to a power forward. I would sooner take Backes.
>>
>>688282963
Ha, I remember Craig MacTavish from being a Blues fan. He was one of the last guys on the team that would'nt wear a helmet.
>>
>>688265939

Moral of the story...for this ENTIRE playoff run...

You better bet your ass that you have the best goalie you can get.
>>
>>688283184
Yeah, if you think Backes is questionable you probably would'nt like Lucic.
>>
>>688283363
Haha, you know your history!

He actually was the last player in the NHL to not wear a helmet.

>>688283530
Exactly, lol. I was actually a little weirded out when we signed Kassian.
>>
>>688282191
I don't know how many times you've seen it earlier, but your eyes lie. Confirmation bias and all that. More important than winning faceoffs is keeping possession after you win one or regaining possession after you lose one, and that's more of a systems thing.

>>688282333
It is a good thread. I had hoped people would be amenable to this sort of discussion, but apparently people still like useless stats. I hope nobody here puts any stock in +/-.
>>
>>688265939
Matt saved this team tbh. Pens fag here
>>
>>688283684
Everyone in the NHL, including me, is thinking the Oilers HAVE to be a threat soon. What is worse, Defense or Goal?
>>
>>688283778
If two teams both possess the puck well - face offs are a huge deal. In the playoffs the games are tight - you're simply wrong just accept and move on.
>>
>>688283778
Eh, I won't argue about it anymore, but I strongly disagree a possession starts with the faceoff. You have a lot going against you losing the faceoff even 60% of the time. Oddly enough, I never cared about the -/+ rating unless a defenseless had one over 5 or so in a game.
>>
>>688284182
Honestly, it is a combination of defense and injuries. We had a fucking brutal season with injuries. I was at the game when McJesus broke his collar bone. Died a bit inside.

That being said, I think I might focus on the drinking a bit more. I will keep this thread in the background, but if it gets deleted, I hope you all have a good night /b/ros.

OP, make another thread tomorrow night around the same time if you fellas wanna shoot the shit again!
>>
>>688284832
Yeah, it's late and I'm in the bloody midwest. I'll grab my coat, throw a 5 on the bar, and see you guys after game 5. Cheers.
>>
>>688280366
Burns is easily the most likable guy on the ice no matter who else is on the ice with him. Dude is goofy as fuck and a reptile lover, as well as a fashionista.
>>
>>688265939

it may just sound salty but i feel like the fix is in for the pengs

saw alot of penalties go unnoticed by the refs, of course the sharks get away with some ocasionally but I feel as though there is a bias against the sharks

seems like its been this way for a while, i dont know why the NHL hates the sharks club so much
