I don't know how these thyings would survive if they weren't kept as pets, at least dogs and cats have hunting instincts. Most transgenic organisms only have a small tweak or two but these appear to be grossly different from whatever organism it came from, these things wouldn't last an instant under selective pressure of any kind

They have a few advantages.
1) They have a reproductive rate somewhere between bunnies and tribbles. r-selected. A mare pumps out litters of 2-8 foals, over and over again. She can have well over a hundred foals.
2) Although their digestion is terrible, they can eat damned near anything. Grass, kibble, trash, sketties, fluffy meat ...
3) Appeal to humans.
4) Seem to have a pretty decent immune system built into them. While you might see a few parasite fluffy stories, they don't seem to get respiratory illnesses or anything else.
