There's just so much more that can go wrong. Welding in and of itself is already incredibly dangerous, accidentally hitting your oxygen line with the torch, not to mention large fish (I'm from the Ohio River Valley area, there are some humongous man-eating catfish there) startling you and causing accidents.
Very few welders retire from the position. Most can only take the physical abuse from the job for about a decade or so until health issues cause them to quit.

$0 I don't have many time for a decent job
When looking at salaries you have to take location and cost of living into consideration. A $75K per year in middle of nowhere Wisconsin is going to get you a lot farther than a $75K per year job in San Francisco. I went to college in a small town in Wisconsin. It always killed me when these companies from the West Coast would come to job fairs on campus and tell soon to be graduates that starting salaries are $60K. What they didn't mention was that $60K annually in L.A. gets you a studio apartment with two roomates and enough cash left over for one meal per day.

Dont worry, if youre a good student you shouldnt have a problem securing interships. Work hard to secure positions within on campus organizations, work on side projects during your leisure time, work on larger projects with instructors, and have a high gpa. Holding a part time job while attending school full time also says a lot about you. With all these things on your resume you'll secure internships without a problem. Youll have plenty to talk about during interviews whether youre asked technical or behavioral questions. The only thing is the is major itself is time consuming.
