Mass Effect and Witcher aren't roleplaying games. They're action adventures.

Fallout was a roleplaying game until they gave the player a default voice with no option to turn it off. Making every single character sound like the same terrible voice actor. This kills the roleplaying. Fallout is now another generic shooter with perks. Just like CoD.

The problem is the fact that the style of RPG that Fallout is doesn't work well with a voice protag because it champions that blank slate style of role playing where you can chose exactly what kind of person you're going to be. In Mass Effect, no matter what choices you make, you're still the established character Commander Shepard. Same thing with The Witcher and Geralt. Fallout games, on the other hand, typically give you a vague background and let you run with it. A voiced protag with a limited amount of dialogue options fucks with that.

Mods are a big reason why so many people have absurd amounts of hours in NV but it's also thanks to the fact that the protag is set up in a way that lets you assume a wide range of roles and personalities and squeeze more playthroughs out of the game.

Despite this, some perks don't even work at all ie. you can max out Lady Killer and Speech-related stuff, yet will be completely unable to convince a female NPC working for the Railroad that you had no choice but to kill some synths.
Absolutely fucking stupid weapon designs.
Lore rape, such as a ghoul kid surviving in a fridge with no food, water, or OXYGEN for 200 years, then being perfectly fine and able to walk when you let him out. Or pre-war Jet. Or T60s.
Low potential for roleplaying because your character will always have the same set profession background depending on your gender, meaning you cannot come up with interesting backstories.
Plotwise, the motives of the Institute make little sense. They have research material already, but commit needless crimes to get more.

So yeah, they hate FO4 because it's a terrible RPG in an RPG franchise, because it places so little importance on player agency and choice.

It might be a passable casual FPS experience, and as with most Bethesda games it makes for a good sandbox for modders, but it's a SHIT excuse for a Fallout game.

Play Fallout 1 and 2.
#1 and #2 made the series known for greatness.
After some failed spinoffs, Bethesda took over and put fallout 3 on their game engine made for TES4, Oblivion, which is basically great graphics with shit gameplay. The engine for skyrim only made it worse, with better support for animations and graphics, but even less skills and in-depth storytelling.
Fallout 4 is no different, the graphics are improved, but the game is dumbed down even further.

Oblivion was also a huge step back from TES3, which also was a huge step back from TES2.
Any game at Bethesda since late 2000's ends up looking great, but lacks any kind of awesome from their predecessors. They are targeted at XBOX-kids with little to no attention span.

The most indepth and amazing game in existence today is probably Dwarf Fortress, and it looks like shit. Looks don't make the game, the game makes the game.

Bethesda RPGs really shine when you're not dungeon crawling. Hackdirt in oblivion. Sheogorath quest in the khajiit village. Killing all the guests in the mansion without them knowing it's you. Amazing quests, immersive, enjoyable, stimulating.

Then you have the dungeons which have always been the chore of the game that's nessesary to do more of the fun stuff. Fallout 4 however is entirely dungeon crawling. They replaced the interesting quests and distractions with settlement building. Which is fun, but ultimately makes the game an unfocused mess

Yes, good gunplay is still a spectacle in 2016.
What makes this game unique is that you have to constantly move around in order not to get killed and that you have to get up close to enemies to heal yourself.
I really recommend you try it.
Also, the glory kills (finishers) are an integral part of the gameplay and you won't get tired of them because they only last half a second.

This is wild but did you know that not every single RPG has to have the same exact gameplay and type of protagonist? Some RPGs have established characters with canon personalities and choices you can make about the gameplay or plot. And sometimes, in a blue moon, RPGs have protagonists with very little established characterization/playstyles and you can go wild and do just about anything you want with them. Fallout is known for being the latter. I know that the concept of a genre having variety between games might be a little overwhelming, take your time.

Look at New Vegas for good quest design. The Van Graaf storyline thing stands out to me. It was immersive and fun, just because it was something different.
Skyrim had bad main quest design imo. In most of my playthroughs I literally only did the first part of the main quest to unlock Thu'um. After that, I went around and did faction questlines, which were far better, and other modded quests that were very well designed.
Fallout 4 might be mechanically much better than the other games in the series, but the lack of good quest design and an immersive story just make that game insufferable after a first playthrough.

Survival mode doesn't change a thing. You just can't save on the fly, or fast travel. They game is still piss easy because you can still make weapons OP as all fuck. Food/Water/Sleep are just as pushover as they were in NV, and deceases become nothing to worry about in a short time.

Don't like the way NPCs interact or ignore what should be enemies? Use any of a series of mods to change it to what you like

There are literally thousands of mods for the game already and if it's anything like 3 and NV, it'll just keep getting better for years.

None of this is fixing the game, because millions of people loved it as is. This is all modifying the game to suit the way you want to play.

I will give some credit to complaints in this thread though - they fucked the lore and canon into the fucking ground and didn't care at all about the origins of things like Jet/Psycho/etc. The kid in the fridge should have never made it to release... c'mon Bethesda, that was just retarded.

I think the sheer size of San Andreas and the storyline and different environments and cities you could go to made it the best one for the time. But yeah gta v blows everything out of the water. the term rpg did not change however.

that is the most important part of "ROLE".
you CREATE a character with his own unique background and skills, depending on a multitude of factors.

Poise is in there, but its really messed up. As it is atm, certain attack animations effectively give you infinite poise at certain times.
But my biggest gripe is their lack of support for Dualshock 4 controllers. So many use them now, and its a huge pain to get mine to work (have to disable so many things in device manager).
Also, how it is still so easily hacked by cheat engine is hilarious.
