Pay attention to the content of the comics. I don't mean to get all Freud here but have a theory that the artists are dealing with repressed childhood injustices through their work - the fluffy ponies are remarkably stupid and nasty, to the extent of sacrificing their children on the grounds of attractiveness. The humans and non-fluffy animals are always portrayed as intelligent and dignified, and more importantly, the humans are in control, I see this as a yearning for mature, responsible and empathetic authority figures to "rescue" one from an unjust and abusive life at the hands of unfit parents/siblings.
