Judge asked guilty, not guilty, no contest. Lawyer said no contest, then offered the deffered disposition. The DA and judge accepted, that was it.

one of my good friends attempted to shoplift a carton of cigarettes from Stop & Shop at Mill Plain Center in Danbury CT, and was apparently observed by LP on camera. But, thecigarettes and the door aren't too far apart, and he grabbed the carton and got out the door rather fast.

The panicked LP guy ran up behind him and punched him in the back of the head, no warning.

Because this obviously isn't what they are supposed to do, the LP guy threw out the video and claimed he was assaulted by my friend, and only defended himself. So my friend wound up with serious charges and I believe 2 years probation, all over simple shiplifting

Well it depends on the state.

In Texas expunged records aren't automatic like some other states. I had to do a whole series of filing separately. That's why my buddies lawyer did deffered disposition instead, cause it became automatically not guilty in 6 months if he didn't commit more crimes.

But yes they threw the goddamn book at me. But I also didn't help myself by not hiring a lawyer or doing prior research on the laws and punishments.

Stores will delete old videos, however they take images of people they've seen stealing. For example I stole some cigarettes from a store and walked out. Went back a few weeks later and was actually buying things. Loss prevention came up and escorted me in the back. The showed me an image from the video they had on me taking the smokes, didn't have the video though. I ended up not saying a single thing to them. Cops showed up and said since I wasn't caught stealing anything at that time and hadn't admitted anything, they weren't going to do anything. Store ended up dropping it all but put me on trespass.
Point is, don't go back to whatever stores you've lifted from and fucking stop. I got addicted to the adrenaline high and it got harder to stop, especially cause I'm pretty good at it. Eventually though, you'll get caught. I'm lucky I don't have a record from it.
