What do you believe makes a person smart /b/?

I personally think it's tolerance because you're smart enough to realise that people can like/hate what they want and you're okay with that.

ones intelligence quotient is very difficult to measure. I believe the ability to dip into several of the multiple intelligences to a reasonable degree would be what most would consider to be "smart" though there are some that believe the ability to master one type of intelligence is what makes someone smart.

My personal belief is that either of these answers can be correct. A jack of all trades and master of none type of brilliance can make for a more well rounded individual and thus they are perceived in a more positive light (Think the jock that also got straight A's and was highly sociable.) while the strictly hyper focused in one area (Jock that is a meat head but amazing at sports, or geek that gets all A's but has the coordination or a toddler) are techincally more proficient in one field but people tend to focus on their shortcomings rather than their proficiency in their given field.

Smart is somewhat subjective in the end but I side with the well rounded over the one trick pony type of mind.

My steps to a long lasting realtionship.
1) Find something you are passionate about.. it can be anything. Sewing, video games, sports, ect.
2) Seek out like minded individuals.
3) Engage in activities surroundings this personal passion.
4) Look within this circle for people you enjoy being around.
5) Nut up and ask them out.
6) Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Ultimately, those that share the same hobbies/likes are more likely to stick together... and honestly the stranger the better because being able to indulge in your weirdness rather than hiding it is insanely liberating.

I agree tolerance is probably part of the equation for intelligence/smartness. Being able to take a step back and see the bigger picture is very important I believe. Look at the recent news of teachers sleeping with students that seems to happen ever week. Not to say whether it's actually "wrong" or "right", I think a smart person wouldn't overreact like most. They would would take an eclectic approach and try to reason out why this is happening taking into account past human trendecies and cultures.

I think the most important thing is the ability to question yourself and get over your emotions. Not just obvious emotions but emotional attachments to positions and beliefs. Supposedly being shown evidence against what you believe can actually make you believe it more. Intelligent people are at least aware of this and try hard to rise above it.
>>
>>687502854

I don't think it's tolerance so much as asking yourself if something really matters, if it's really a problem or is it just your stupid human instincts? It's not a big difference but I think there's a distinction between tolerance and acceptance.

>>687502854
Fine, I'll take this obvios bait.
You're mixing up the cause with the effect. Being tolernat in no fucking way may ever make you smarter, on the other hand you could possibly become more tolerant if you are intellingent and then realise it's for your own benefit.
As to the intelligence itself, it all depends on measures. We have people doing great in the intelligence tests, who can never cope with the most basic problems... It all depends on the measure we use

OP here.

Seems like a lot of you dislike the idea of tolerance being the equivalent of intelligence.
I get that, it makes sense because you look like someone who just lets the world roll by.

I'm glad to see that most of ppl who post here realise that IQ isn't a real measurement of intelligence rather it's a measurement of the ability to connect the dots - which in it's own way is what being smart is but not necessarily the only valid option.

I like the idea of being jack of all trades, too bad i can't accomplish that. i'm only mediocre at everything i do even though i'm a fast learner.
>>
>>687515986
Great Apes and Lesser Apes are the two groupings of the same thing.. Apes. You're making the argument of "that's not a hat, that's a fedora" but both words can describe the same thing.. one is just more specific.

>"Hominids" that terminology has become synonymous with "ape"

That is incorrect. A hominid is an ape but it doesn't mean they mean the same thing. It's like saying "rabbit" means "animal" because a rabbit is an animal. It's slightly pedantic I know but wtf are we doing in a thread about being smart if we can't be a bit pedantic about the facts?

Well, to be fair we are talking apples and oranges here. Hominid is a taxonomic term while Ape is not. The term ape is an oversimplification of a complex terminology and to that point I do agree. However, since this is /b/ I steered toward the simple over the complex.

In my opinion OP, I think intelligence is strong social skills and being able to "step back" from yourself and remove the charectar mask and ego attached to your WHOLE life. Being humble, thinking intuitively, and being quick on your feet is what intelligence is to me. I also think being able to see through society and other peoples bullshit is a big quality of intuition. Self discipline is another big one. Maybe I'm describing success more than intelligence.

OK, wasn't saying you didn't know it, just thought it was worth pointing out. I think of ape as just the common word for hominoids but people use it in all sorts of ways so you're right about that.

they are totally our fault though.

If that's the way you think, you're pretty stupid.

Oh, I *love* having serious inteligent discussions here. In fact I had some with the most intelligent people I met in my life
>and then sometimes a faggot like you comes and spoils the fun

Lol thinking any conspiracies could be orchestrated at a high level like that. Yeah, you're the dumbass. I think the part that is wrong about tolerance is that it isn't a global approach but a racial approach. Blacks are rascist pieces of shit.

True because no matter how intelligent these NEETS who spend all their time on internet forums think how smart they are they will never be remembered for anything other than trolling some camwhore off the net.

Because you can't learn from the wrong doings of somebody? Remember anon, true evil does not exist.

Being able to adapt fast.
Getting along with new people and finding your place in new places fast is what makes you smart imo.

Your fun gets spoiled as soon as someone points who that your spelling is bad? Boy, are you autistic. If it's bothers you so much, maybe take some English classes or learn to use spell check? Not that hard if you're not completely retarded and a lazy piece of shit. I doubt you're able to have any sort of intelligent or meaningful interacts with anyone, especially since you can't respond with anything but ad hominems.

Intelligence is pretty multifaceted, but I'd have to say if you were to pinpoint the thing all different types of smart have in common, it's the ability to visualize problems effectively and adapt and learn based on entirely internal reflections.

Basically, a smart person can simply learn faster than someone who isn't because their brain is better at simulating things and learning from those simulations than others.

A smart person can do that for one thing he's likely obsessed with, a genius can do it for whatever he wants.

The general belief that intelligence is just IQ and raw brainpower is incorrect, there are a lot of autists that can do math, paint, socialize, etc really well, but if they can't apply their skills to multiple disciplines they're not smart, they're just obsessive enough that they have become skilled.

True intelligence is the marriage between pattern recognition, mental agility, creativity, and an open mind.

Imagination. The ability to create new ideas given less than a complete picture.

The rest of your post was passable but rather general, you weren't actually saying a whole lot that isn't obvious. Anyway I always think of an absence of criticism as tacit approval when I'm on 4chan.

And btw your "but the majority do" defense is the oldest trick in the book.

You can learn from anything, whether or not it's of value is another question.
