What does /b/ think about maths?

I'm going to study applied mathematics so it's interesting to know what others think of it

Have a degree in applied math. No job yr after grad. Have fun with your debt

Why does mathematics do such a good job at modeling reality? Does math underlie the universe? Is there something organic about math?
>>
good shit, what's your background so far? If you're not a naturally gifted Mathematician you will not be able to compete with the experts on the field and it's quite unlikely that you'll end up as successful academic.
If you just want to get a good job Mathematics is useful but there are better more practical courses out there which provide similar numerical skills.

>>687464832
that's because you suck, I know plenty of people who have studied applied Mathematics and they are in well-paying jobs now (or academics).

Math is great. Just finished my BS and going to grad school at some point. I did pure math though so I didn't do much applied stuff, mainly just interested in research.
>>
>>687464832
uh no, Maths has been designed to fit the universe, not the other way round...?

I studied Chemistry with Molecular Physics at Imperial College and I know several people who did varying degrees of Applied Mathematics there.
Not a single one of my friends is now unemployed - the reason why you are unemployed is because you're not a gifted Mathematician.
Neither am I, but at least I've not made the decision to compete on a field on which I can't win.

Compared to what? And lots of math was invented and developed specifically to model things.

When that other anon says 'going into academics' he probably means people looking to become professors and do research into solving current problems and developing new mathematics. It's extremely important work and it shouldn't be belittled.

The elite of curriculums, cream of the cream. Chemistry and physics are tolerable. Almost everything else is for retards and the general mentally challenged. Exchanging telling glances with other maths guys when meeting non-maths guys will be a frequent occurrence.

You can't be too smug, only not smug enough.

Shit-tier, way below pleb-tier. They should close these departments and get those morons to do some menial labor or something. Maybe they'd coincidentally end up doing something useful for once. For more, see >>687467080, telling glance implied.

At this point theoretical mathematics is on par with metaphysics and philosophy in its general uselessness, except philosophy-fags can make for good drinking buddies.

Enjoy mapping out the consequences of your assumptions, or lets face it, enjoy trying to follow other peoples' "work" while pretending to be a "theoretical mathematician".

Applied is tough stuff. Eventually, you will be constructing your own partial differential equations, which is something beyond my capabilities and I aced calc 1-3 and aced ordinary diffEq
>>
>>687468498
So you passed high school? Great job.
>>
>>687467869
You must have no idea how many math concepts that were once considered 'purely theoretical', 'useless', or 'pointless' are now regularly applied in physics, chemistry, etc. It's hard to tell where the next major application will come from in pure math, so we have to study it.
>>
>>687468498
0^0=0^1/0^1=0/0=undetermined

This. Gauss's law was pure theory until charge density of surfaces and volumes were quantified.

All you need to know is that the angle of dangle is equal to the heat of the meat times the mass of the ass.
>>
>>687469418
Good example. I'd also like to add that the concept of a vector field in physics was also considered ridiculous at the time.

Also, that other anons post seems to imply that pure math is inherently bad; which in itself is ridiculous. There isn't a problem with doing math for the sake of math, and it's how many discoveries are made.

You be fine and find jobs easily

>It's hard to tell where the next major application will come from in pure math, so we have to study it.

kek, this is what theoretical mathematicians keep telling themselves, but somehow all the funding goes to science. Guess no-one actually believes that bs. Have fun though with proving if there are or are not finite numbers of relative prime triplets or some other such esoteric question.

I've already made my point. There are many things in mathematics that were once though to have no application that now do.

I find it funny that you referenced a problem in number theory, as there are many things and number theory and closely related areas in group theory that now have applications in cryptography and computing.

You essentially picked one of the areas of math that didn't have applications for hundreds of years then became a cornerstone of modern computing.

One more year to go, I'm pretty decent at maths since I'm doing some higher degree mathematics in my free time, I think I can handle 70% of analysis I atm

Since I wanna focus on Operations Research I don't know if applied maths or economical maths is better
>>
>>687469004
I don't think so.
log(0^0) = 0/0
log(0/0) = 1/0
so 0^0 ≠ 0/0

Congrats, theoretical mathematicians contributed one stone to a whole building made out of physics and engineering. Not a cornerstone though, just a little contribution in configuration of key and lock, which still had to be build and configured by engineers in the end.

Pure math undergrad here. None of that applied math bullshit. If your teachers aren't good, get ready to struggle, but it's worth it. Get used to kahn academy. Biggest options after undergrad are: any analytics jobs, some finance stuff, or pursue masters for: government (cushy), and teaching (no $, much time)
>>
>>687472277
>I'm doing some higher degree mathematics in my free time
That's what happens when something gets applied.

You must not know how big things like elliptic curve cryptography are. At this point I think you're just trolling or unnecessarily salty. I've already made my point and this conversation is running in circles so I'm done.

No it's not. It might be if you do the same exercises over and over to get a new idea or concept... But that's only school-related, it's not about maths
