should i learn the guitar or not? why/why not?
do it its fun
>>687447288
is it too hard?. i can only play drums
>>687447320
Im not playing for very long, but when you start its kinda hard, but when u have the chords so you dont have to look how you have to put the fingers, it is quite easy to learn a song but it really depends on the song a big amount of Nirvana songs are easy to play i started with them.
>>687447162
chicks dig guys who play the tuba
that's science
Horey shet. I've never liked that guy's terrible views except when he rekts feminists, but pic is straight up wack.
>>687447570
yeah i getcha. but fuck that.
i don't just want to play other fuckheads' songs. i wanna play really well and be original.
should i learn guitar - or a different melodic instrument.
PROS:
Impress friends and most any regular joes
CONS:
Impress no one else unless you get really, REALLY really good.
>>687447736
Yeah so i said it depends when u play like you just play (u know what i mean) then its quite hard but you get it with the time
7777 get
>>687447743
i dont wanna impress. i just want a cool melodic instrument to write on, and to play original jams on. guitars are also super cool. i want to get a stratocaster or something
>>687447935
Sounds like you want to learn the guitar
>>687447743
what are some other - more long term - professional - pros/cons
>>687448017
yeah. but sax maybe? piano/keys?
>>687447935
I play a stratocaster its so fun
>>687448136
it is really hard though - to be good and original
>>687447935
Yuck are you 15? That's exactly what I sounded like when I got a guitar at 15.
>>687447162
I've learned in the past 2 months. Lost my job and had enough money to be NEET for a while. I have been playing for about 4-8 hours a day and am super impressed with how much progress I've made. You won't regret it.
Actual endorsed guitarist here. It's definitely worth learning. Being able to write and play music is one of the most satisfying things a person can do.
>>687448382
i'm 19, but really believe what i said. pretty cringey maybe, but i just want a rad thing to jam on, the drums arent melodic and i want to play a melodic instrument.
>>687448382
And now you play because you want to impress people?
nothing wrong with what he said
>>687448613
>>687448554
alright you've convinced me. anyone know where to start if I want a cool lookin (maybe old - from the 80s) stratocaster. Fender only.
>>687448791
Jumping straight to an 80s strat is a pretty big commitment money wise. Honestly if you want to start learning and want a strat but yourself a squire. Great guitar to learn on, plus if you decide guitar isn't for you, then you're not out too much money
>>687448613
>>687448554
>>687448791
A STRAT LIKE THIS ONE: on the left
>>687447162
Uh, if you don't spend the time learning to play the guitar, what do you think you would be doing instead?
>>687448791
I swear by Pawn shops and Ebay.
>>687449049
squier is cheaper is see. but i really want a fender, my whole band has fender gear and they are a cool american brand. part of the image i guess - having FENDER on the neck
>>687449145
sticking to drums.
>>687448664
You fucking imbecile. A simple google search will reveal to you what a melodic instrument is, which very ironically is actually percussive. The guitar is a chromatic instrument. Apart from that, go for it but don't expect to be writing your own riffs or whatever your deformed idea of original music is without having to play Nirvana and similar shit for countless hours. If you're serious about it, you'll get an acoustic first.
>>687449288
ok ok chromatic i gettit now.
why does everyone tell me to start with acoustic. i want a cool electric strat
>>687449204
Yeah, I understand that. If you are certain that you really do want to play guitar, then I'd check out guitar centers used selection online. I picked up a vintage Ibanez from them for $200 with the case included
>>687449244
Ah, okay. Um, it's always good to expand your horizons.
Guitar is fun to play. Eases the mind just to grab your guitar and wail around for a bit.
Plus, you can play a ton of songs just as beginner.
>>687449426
I found that acoustic skills transfer somewhat to electric whereas not so much the other way around.
>>687449426
Because it's harder. You'll develop much better technique on an acoustic and when you grab that electric you'll feel like you can fly. >>687449426
>>687449288
Honestly starting with an acoustic tends to hinder skill growth. Most people seem to get an acoustic, get comfortable with chords, and maybe the pentatonic scale, but never succesfully jump to electric because the increased sensitivity and importance of picking technique throws them off. If anything I would recommend everyone start on electric
>>687449716
yeah but fuck that. i wanna be good. and original.
every site that teaches guitar says how easy it is to play 4 chord songs and play along to brit-pop and nirvana. but i wanna be good, really good. and original.
is it hard to break through to having a unique voice on guitar.?? or will i forever be just another fucko playing shitty open chords and strumming away like a fuckwit
>>687447162
learn an instrument that everyone else doesnt already fucking play.
>>687449818
>>687449798
both good points. DONT KNOW WHO TO BELIEVE. whaere do i start guys?
>>687450017
I play guitar and say this. Guitar is DPS, be a Tank or healer or something.
>>687450265
>>687450017
LIKE WHAT? sax? keys? what else is a cool and portable and original and rad and melodic as guitar?
>>687450047
I guess a big factor is, what kind of music do you aspire to be able to play?
>>687450411
new wave, rock, pop.
music like The Police, Phil Collins, Yes, Klark Kent.
>>687450366
learn the piano and figure... that will give you an idea of how to play every other instrument you want.
>>687447714
Don't listen to this guy OP. The French horn is what they really love.
>>687449948
How old are you anon just curious?
>>687450366
I have a friend who plays banjo and ukulele
>>687450530
For that style learning on an acoustic wouldn't be too bad for you. For more technical stuff I would recommend starting on electric
>>687450562
whywhywhy. i want to play a string thing also. keys are cool, but im sick of sitting, at my drum kit - or at a keyboard. i want to stand up and strum some strings
>>687450562
same fag here... tbh, you should probably just learn your voice and look for people who already know how to play an instrument to accompany you. no one is going to care about anything you play on a guitar unless you're singing at the same time.
>>687450721
yeah but i wanna rock, really play some synthy new wave chords, and play quick and fast classical guitar like a punk rocker.
>>687450743
kek just fucking get one then anon. You could be intermediate by the end of summer and if it doesn't work out, get a different instrument.
>>687450780
yeah i getcha. but is guitar the right choice for a cool new wave voice?
>>687450872
whats intermediate? playing to 4-chord songs? i wanna be original and rock out to some twangy synth harp-ish chords. will that be years of hard practice away?
>>687450930
i'm going to reluctantly say yes.
>>687447715
what bout his views dont you like?
>>687450826
If you really want an electric, by all means get one. Probably good to learn on what you intend to play anyway.
>>687451169
no... you need to get an acoustic guitar so you can play it anytime/anywhere. youre going to need to pretty much hide/carry it with you all the time and work on writing songs after you learn like G C D A E power/bar chords.
>>687451310
good point, i'll start with that maybe and save up for a expensive fender strat
>>687449426
>>687449948
>>687450530
>>687450826
electric or acoustic depending on what kind of music you like you
ie don't buy a classical guitar if you like rock music also make sure that shit looks cool nothing more demotivating then an ugly ass guitar
the most important part of buying a guitar is making sure its setup properly unless you want to be playing for less then ten minutes at a time get that shit setup at a local store and stop being a cheap ass
Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was jimmi hendrix you wont be the lead for slayer anytime soon
>but i wana be cool and original mayyyyyyyyyn
learn the basic chords first as a base you will sound like ass if you try to do anything else
your best bet as being a nub would be to use variations of chords that you have learned if you want to be "original" ie bar chords 7th chords are the easiest BUT LEARN FUCKING NORMAL CHORDS FIRST
from someone who owns an ibanez gio
>Roast me fags
>>687451391
ewwww
>>687450826
Get what You will stick with. I started with electric, but pretty much play a classical now.
One pro to and acoustic is portability. Having a guitar at the beach or pool,or yes even being that guy at a party will, and I repeat, will get you pussy.
>>687451310
It appears we have very different on songwriting. Them again those chords basically do make up every popular mainstream rock song ever, so I guess there's something to their merit..
>>687451603
dont listen to this guy... get a cheap classical guitar so you can learn how to stretch your fingers
>>687447162
at first itll be hard but just stick with it. by this point im playing extended range 8 string guitars
>>687451603
kek alright i getcha.
but how long will it take if i practice a lot to be good. like able to be original and jam not just like some faggot at an open mic.
btw anyone have any recommendations for a light, thin, relatively inexpensive acoustic?
>>687451865
Ibanez has some really good cheap acoustics look them up on ebay. That's what I'm currently using now.
>worthit.jpg
>>687451865
i joined a band after a couple years (with other shitheads who also couldnt play)
>>687452002
or amazon
>>687451865
Yamaha makes decent cheap acoustics, or if you're looking to spend a bit more takamine is nice
>>687452002
what about fender. all my band has fender gear, and i like fender a lot. do they make good acoustics?
>>687452002
dude.. dont listen to this metal guy with the fucking faggy ibanez shit. if you google ibanez guitars you're gonna see how cringey they are. just get something classic looking that holds tune and has a couple scratches
>>687452094
just go to a guitar store and get the best one in your price range
>>687452094
fender is a popular brand and looks normal.
>>687452147
like fender? or are they better at electtrics?
>>687452094
They make good and cheap Electrics (Fender Squire) not sure about their acoustics tho
>>687452232
doesnt matter.. fender has been around long enough they know what they;re doing.
>>687452232
just dont buy ibanez
>>687452147
They are decent for starting up and very good for beginners no joke.Get lost you're clearly musically inept anon.
>>687452306
>>687452068
>>687452002
>>687451712
link me up plz boys. i dont even know what type Im looking for. classical? or the telecaster looking type of acoustic?
>>687452420
suck more cocks metalfag
>>687452398
why not?
>>687452398
>>687452573
dont want to play metal at all. is ibanez metal focused?
>>687452573
yeah... maybe im wrong, lets ask OP. Hey OP... do you want to be in Pantera ?
>>687452497
Metal fag? I guess playing on an Ibanez Acoustic makes me a metal fag >>687452478 anon buy an Ibanez or Fender Acoustic either one will do you good they're cheap enough.
>>687452628
Nope
>>687452654
nup no way. new wave rock and synthy 80s rock
>>687452662
for real.. OP can judge ibanez himself... he can google image them and see what they look like. If he feels comfortable holding one of those im cool with that.
>>687452724
you like Suburban Lawns? I just got a reissue of their self titled album
>>687452777
Checked and yeah we gave you options it's up to Op to decide which one he likes better.
>>687452628
more then anything its how you setup your amp thats going to make you sound metal or clean not the guitar unless your running active pickups which are shiet for cleans but all guitars in your bracket ie beginner wont have active pickups so go with which one looks/sounds the coolest to you
>>687452844
yes! i do like suburban lawns. not many people even know who they are. they were around when the police were, that how i know them. their guitarist is super cool. where do you buy their music?
>>687452982
i support this pick. id say get any cheap alternative to a martin d28
>>687453062
end of an ear... in austin texas
>>687452982
>>687453094
Here's an Ibanez if you don't really like the Fender I posted Op
>>687453179
oh ok cool. doesnt look like they ship to australia.
>>687453238
dude.. people who buy ibanez are usually brand-loyal metalfags... i dont think its the first thing that comes to mind when people are shopping for acoustic guitars... just let it rest man... we get it, you like ibanez
>>687452982
>>687453238
the fender looks sweet. but arent there really thin acoustics? who makes them?
>>687453398
no one plays them man... it seems like a good idea but yeah... just get a full body acoustic
>>687453238
who buys a twelve string as there first guitar??
>>687453542
uh... metalfags... for real man, this guy will never be able to tune if he buys a 12 string first
>>687447736
WOAH Fuckin Autistfag you don't just start writing you're own shit, you build upon other foundations by learning other people's songs then applying them to yours
anyone have a pic/link of a acoustic guitar that doesnt have a typical pick guard and looks cool and doesn't look country.
>>687453623
sounds fucking dumb... but really id say you only need EADG to start learning ... 4 strings lol if you can learn to play an acoustic guitar with like just your top (closest to your face) strings... you;re all set.
>>687453692
yeah i get it.
but i just dont wanna aspire to be a average pub player who can play any nirvana song.
i wanna play twangy cool original stuff, and i just wonder how long it'll take me?
>>687447935
High expectations for someone who doesn't wanna learn other people's songs
>>687453697
just forget about the looks of it man... you dont wanna be seen playing an acoustic anyway... it looks douchey and no one wants to fucking hear you play guitar until youre on a stage anyway
>>687447162
I have only been playing for a year, started in my mid-thirties. It has one of the most enjoyable activities I have ever done. I bought a decent Martin acoustic at a local pawnshop, and I have gotten more hours of fun per dollar out of it than anything else I own.
>>687447162
Don't be a fag, play bass instead
>>687453855
i get you dude... none of these other dudes listen to new wave probably. get a cheap acoustic guitar that you can hide-away with.. write down every idea you have for a song in a book you hide from everyone. learn how to make basic songs and apply your lyrics to them. maybe get a cheap drum machine to play along with and once you get a kinda decent little song together you need to record it on your phone so you dont lose it... you can refine it later (as you go).
>>687453858
idk. i just wanna be more than a pub open mic faggot.
why does EVERYONE i ask have the attitude which is gleeful at the prospect of learning nirvana and oasis and other alternative try hard's songs.
its never "learn every little thing she does is magic, or huey lewis to start". its always "learn coldplay and nirvana, and losing my religion". how about some ambition jesus christ.
>>687449204
>Having FENDER on the neck
I believe it is called the headstock but hey they're apart of the same thing
>>687454012
nobody cares about bass unless ur singin. (sting, cream). the green day bassist looks stupid doing nothing
>>687454012
any fag can learn to play bass
>>687454104
right on. i'm doin that. buyin a second hand fender acoustic.
thanks for the help /b/
>>687454144
>>687454104
dont learn to play other peoples songs first. trust me on this man... if you want to rip-off someone elses song and re-write their lyrics it would be more productive.
>>687449818
>>687450047
Not this guy
if it's to get pussy
don't even bother
if you genuinely want to find out if you have passion for it, then by all means try it and learn for free online
>>687450721
He's fucking new, he should climb his way up from smoke on the water to seven nation army and so on till he's at 21st century schitzoid man like I am
>>687454144
Listen dude. You can't just start writing your own shit on guitar from the get go. You have to learn the theory, learn the basic chords, and learn other people's songs first. Nobody picks up the guitar and plays their own shit without having done anything else. If you're not willing to learn the basics you will never get anywhere
>>687451066
You fucking cunt, start at the bottom
>>687454748
dude is a drummer... dude has a grasp of music theory.... stop being a self-important twat who thinks he learned something no one else could possibly just pick-up easily.
>>687454748
yeah i know. but ya know, will it take forever to get past that shit.??
I agree with most people on this thread. Getting an acoustic first is the best way to go. If you want to be serious about playing guitar and get good relatively fast, you'll want to be playing everywhere all the time.
Besides, a huge detriment to performance is being able to play in front of other people. You might as well start getting that out of the way as soon as possible.
Now, with regards to wanting to be 'original,' I would say that the fact that you listen to Yes will set your apart from most indiefags right off the bat. Seriously, all indie music sounds the same to me, and it's boring as all fuck.
Original sounding ideas will come once you expand your theoretical pallete into 7th chords and modes. Practice the keys consistently and experiment with alternate tunings once you're comfortable.
If you want to get laid, start singing too.
>>687454924
It will take time like learning any instrument. It will all depend on how much time you devote to it and how often. You have to be patient, period. You won't become a guitar whiz in 2 weeks
>>687454909
yeah totally could pick up something like cliffs of dover and start writing my own shit without having played the instrument before. fucking retard
the world needs less professional guitar players. this guy wants to play new wave... which if you listen to a lot of it you can see its out there. i think it would be stupid for him to start going down some sort of traditional learning route... the kid is probably too old for that anyway and no one would even care about his music end the end.
the kids only chance is being creative and figuring out how to do something his own way... getting his own sound.
i think the kid is inclined to agree with me
>>687455028
fuck this guy. you shouldnt be the guy who gets his guitar out and learns infront of people... thats shameful. this guy "all indie music" motherfucker just ignore his shit.
>>687453855
No you clearly don't get it you pretentious fuck, "I wanna play cool twangy stuff", it will take you fucking years you retard
>>687455265
yea
but how hard is it to get my own sound from a guitar. will it take how many YEARS? decades?
>>687455433
yeah man.. years... a couple years to learn to even use a guitar in any real way, then you join a shitty little band and hone your craft... this will take a few more years. record rough versions of every little song you make... write down every little shitty idea you have for a song. seriously work on it OUT OF SIGHT ... and then when youre ready you can put together a little cheap ass self produced demo and start doing little gigs here and there. trust me on this man... ignore most of the dudes on this thread, theyre all cocksuckers who probably are in shitty bands that never played anywhere or toured and have no idea what kind of music you like.
>>687455433
dont wanna be pretentious, because obviously i cannot play the guitar.
but whats with this lack of grand ambition from guitar players. is it killed by the instruments' difficulty or what? is it so hard to play cool twangy stuff? or will I for years be confined to lame 4-chord coldplay or brit-pop cover songs?
>>687455393
lol, you're such a fag
The shame of butchering a song in front of someone has literally been the thing that's spurred me on the most.
What I mean, OP, is that once you know a song well enough to be ok with playing it, by all means show it to a friend. It's very important to understand how you respond to the audience.
Disregard this other faggot entirely. I bet he hasn't gone past Wonder Wall.
>>687455493
Fucking spaz, If you have a "Sound" that's just called playing the same style of music with almost the same chords with almost the same melody. A sound is just an excuse for people who are shit to seem original
>>687455720
so definitely acoustic for this style of picking up the guitar then.
dont want to get ahead of myself, but can acoustics use pedals through a PA?
>>687455720
i mean... chances are youre never gonna really sell any albums and no one will care but if you want to be a musician this is the best way to start doing it. if you want to be a paid musician and get booked for studio time and play an ibanez ... listen to everyone else.
>>687455743
on drums, i think i have a real sound ya know. like middle eastern backbeats and syncopated western rhythms. dont hear it out there ya know, because i wanna do it.
i just wonder if I'll ever get my own sound if I pick up guitar now (im 19). and how long will it take
>>687455901
i mean... you wouldnt want to play the acoustic in front of anyone ever... its for learning. once you have like 10 shitty little songs (verses and a nice little catchy chorus (if thats your thing)) you can approach other people about putting together a shitty band. after you learn but before you start looking for a band.. youre going to want to invest a little more money into a decent little amp and electric guitar (that you NOW think looks cool).
>>687456181
maybe that telecaster you were talking about earlier (they can be twangy as fuck)
>>687456306
get a used one with scratches
like... fuck everyone else here on all of this. I'm the dude you came to get advice from. i have all the answers on this for real
>>687456181
i have a band (3-piece). i'm the drummer and our guitarist is quite good - and all the way from england.
i wanna play more than a banging rhythm though, and want to pick up guitar. will it take ages for me to catch up to my drumming self though?
>>687447162
Learn piano. Then learn guitar.
>>687455724
Samefag here... The sky's the limit but you don't start with Hendrix because you physically and mentally won't be capable of it.
You're a fatass who wants to learn how to run a marathon without any training
>>687456415
whaddya play?
