Not the same thing. Beast/Zoo is actual animals. Furry are fictitious creatures with human attributes. They are presented as fully self aware and sentient beings with minds comparable to a human.
This is no the same as an animal with no formal means of communication or ability to connect.
Simply put, Furries/Anthros are essentially humans that just happen to have physical features like that of various creatures.

No. Personally, I was originally a ponyfag (hence the name to those that can see it) and it led me to being a furfag, but I've long since distanced myself from it. I hated the fandom, as do many other furries.

Me neither. Mew was the first which came to mind because I like cats and always though it sounds cute. Was only a placeholder because I wanted to try NS, but now I guess I'm stuck with it.
It's really generic tho, I think even a Pokémon is named Mew. And it's a username which is never free anywhere as well.

No worries. As for MLP... it's more of a sub-genre. Just Digjmon, Pokemon, Sonic, or Monster Girls. They all do fall in the same realm, as non-human creatures with human like features or characteristics (thoughts, emotion, language, culture), but are all respectively not furry by lack of direct association and intentions upon their design, but also furry (to some degree) by default due to their design and characteristics.
As an example, look at loony toons. They are anthropomorphic creatures, and as so, can be called furries. However, they were not created for or even by furries.
To be honest, the over whelming majority of media in the furry community/genre is original characters. Yes, characters from established and licensed shows are used and celebrated, but still can be separated for their classifications.
