Brandon Sanderson actally wrote a pretty good report on magic in fantasy, I think it basically said that if you can fully explain it, if you can do anything with it, and there is limitless power in it. Then it's a bad magic system.

In the show they really don't touch on even a tenth of the magical shit that happens in the books. And that shit is broken as fuck
