Well the probability is very high that humans, the earth, and most likely the whole universe will eventually be wiped out so extremely quickly that you would never even notice dying.
There are forces that you or I could not even comprehend out there, just one errant wave of cosmic energy, or one large asteroid that hit a planet just the right way is currently heading towards our little planet right now.
We would have little to no warning, not that would do any good, and almost instantly everything would be gone.
So yah, I think the real point of philosophizing about apocalypse is to usher in a better understanding that you should live your life to the fullest while you can. The realization that you are going to die, no matter what you do, is just going to happen. It is out of your hands. But that thought is mostly ignored to allow us to live life, so the next best thing is the threat (a very real threat) of an apocalypse. Hilariously it is more digest-able by most minds to think of some event that kills everyone then to think of the natural course of death that will happen anyways!
