I have some pretty pleb taste it seems as I hated most of the books featured in all the top 100 lists there are.
pic related was pretty good though.
I also liked Enders Game, some of the Artemis Fowl series when I was younger.
Anyone got any good fantasy or sci-fi book recommendations?

Oh forgot to mention Animal Farm. Read it when I was just a kid, and loved it. Read it again at 20 and loved it even more.
Hated 1984 though.

The Forever War is really good

These two should be required reading for boys when they turn 13, especially if they were raised by a single mom. Also Captains Courageous, Call of the Wild, and Robinson Crusoe.

Colorless Tsukuru is next on my summer reading list. Finishing up Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino (which popped up as a related author/book when I bought CT) right now and it's pretty good.

Ulysses - Good book although allusions and metaphors are on the strong side. I preferred Finnegans Wake (late Joyce)
Lolita - Good book, I kind of felt sorry for Humbert Humbert but at the same time he was a pedo.

People with English degrees need to find books with "deep meaning" that explore the "human condition". AKA they need books that they can write a paper about and bullshit enough to pull a B.
You my dear anon are a fan of the dirty, gutter whore of literature (to those of refined taste) that is "genre fiction". You DARE to like, for instance, Science Fiction. You dirty fucking ape.
I joke of course, I goddamn love science fiction.
You should try reading:
>The Foundation series by Issac Asimov.
Just wonderful. The " Trilogy" includes "Foundation" "Foundation and Empire" and "Second Foundation". Asimov then wrote two sequels and two prequels, but please do yourself the huge favor of at least reading the original trilogy.
>Dune by Frank Herbert
Give this one a chance. The universe it presents is so different to science fiction universes like Star Wars that you have to read a little way to get what is going on in the first few pages. People are inevitably confused by the first few pages, but it is a very well written and explained book, you just have to read it. The universe is rich and interesting, it is deep science fiction with political intrigue that would make George RR Martin cream his pants. The sequels include "Dune Messiah" "Children of Dune" "God Emporer of Dune" "Heretics of Dune" and "Chapterhouse Dune". DO NOT read the works of his son, they are shit.
>Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
I know you said that you didn't like 1984, this is another Dystopian future book, but a very good one and much different than Orwell's. What if instead of crushing surveillance, hatred and pain controlling a population you controlled them through pleasure and distraction? What would a sane man trying to do great things feel trapped in a world of sedated morons feel? This book explores that.
>>686784243
Back of the pleb line you go, this way is for patricians only.
Foundation Series - Asimov's

>Confederacy of Dunces: Book about a /b/tard before the Internet...
>>686784992
Read it. It's great. People laugh at it because it's not an easy read so they don't understand it. The world desparately needs the philosophy contained in her books
>>686785529
Right? Even the title sums up /b/ in a nutshell.
>>686785073
the later books are better
>>686785073
It's definitely a suitable book for younger people. I'm college age, so grain of salt:
My opinion is that they drag on at parts, seem to fill up space that is already crowded.
There are some good moments, themes and ideas and I think the ending is a bit anticlimactic and goes on a bit but it's better than some flowery thing.
I would recommend it - don't need to rush to it though!
Recommend me a great fantasy series?

You managed to get some of my absolute favorites, and some of my most hated books in a single post.
Farenheit 451 is the most god damned boring thing I've ever been forced to read. I always thought it was oddly fitting that a book about burning books is probably the one most deserving to be turned to ash.
>>686785772
What kind of fantasy tickles you.
Jim Butcher can handle you on three separate fronts.
Dresden Files - Modern day magician
Codex Alera - More traditional fantasy, people control the elements using familiars
The Cinder Spires - new series, steampunk, floating islands, sky pirates.
>>686786263
That's amusing as all hell, do share which ones you love and which ones you hate (excluding Fahrenheit of course)

Synopsis: I don't want to play anymore so I'm taking the ball and going home.
It's a poorly written propaganda piece that tugs at the heartstrings of American Libertarians, usually very young or very old, that don't have a very firm grasp of how our nation actually works. There are some valid points raised in the narrative translateable to intellectual property rights and fair use, but it gets trampled by the overly preachy way the story is told.

Not a troll. Yes im in my 30s. Yes I'm still a fan of Ayn Rand since i read Fountainhead about 10 years ago. Yes she's a Russian that fled communism and her philosophy is based on her experience living under communism. She mocks the entitled non producers that have disdain for the producers and creators of our society. If only more people were taught this at a younger age, we would have more hard workers and less entitled cunty little snowflakes running around

>>686786343
I'll probably be shat on for this, but I really could not stand the Dresden Files.
I rather liked On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony though. Never got a chance to read the rest of the series, but it was one of the few "fantasy in modern times" that I liked.
And NOBODY mentioned Philip Kindred Dick?
Like, literally every his book is worth mentioning, one of the best being
>Do Andriods Dream Of Electric Sheep?
ethics, religion, lasers, what does it mean to be a himan
>The man in the High Castle
cant describe it properly, but perfect
>Divine Invasion
religion to the max, origin or religion, drug visions
>Scanner Darkly
drugs, drugs, drugs. Movie was good, but missed most of the points
Honestly, my favourite author. Perfect psychologist

Excellent. You have a lot of reading to do.
Dresden Files is at 15 books and a short story comp
Codex Alera finished at 6
And Cinder Spires, as previously stated, is new so one book.
The Malazan Book of the Dead series was pretty dope. Prolly my favorite fan-fic

>>686786516
I loved Hitchhikers guide, Ready Player One (I posted it somewhere above), mogworld was okay.

Haven't read the ones I didn't mention, though Shades of Grey sounds interesting.

>>686787123
No, at least the bible has some entertainment value...
>>686786526
Atlas Shrugged is a terribly written piece of shit. It spends 3/5ths of the book having characters describe John Gault's philosophy, then 2/5ths of "him" (Rand preaching) his philosophy on a radio.
She should have just written a thesis paper and left out all the fiction.
>>686786727
I like PKD's short stories best, so full of ideas.

They aren't bad... they just dawdle between the good bits. Kinda like when you read a book with multiple POV's and you just want to skip the boring characters chapters.
>>686787245
he made many of them into his books. Like Divine Invasion is based on one and The Penultimate Truth on another and probably many more
The road - cromac McCarthy
>>686778726
Yeah 1984 wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It's pretty weird how it's coming true though.
>>686787503
Hated the main character but I cried like a bitch at the end.
>>686787168
I liked Magicians because the author is so malicious towards his main character it was refreshing to me.
I really recommend Jasper Fforde. Shades of Grey is truly a great piece of dystopian fiction even if it's played for laughs the whole time
>>686787209
Thats a relief. Can you suggest any other authors then?
I might recommend Necromancer (forgotten the author). It's good. Lots of action. But it lacks philosophy
>>686787471
Once the overarching story kicked in there really wasn't much time to waste but it can drag a little in those early books for sure

I liked Ender's Game and Speaker for he Dead, but it seems like the author doesn't know how to finish up a story. At the end of each book he sets up the next one.
I've only read those two in the series, does it go on like that?

Guys, its a long shot, but I'm looking for a book.
Its about a stable boy that befriends a dragon that is kept chained up(I think) in a kingdom somewhere. He takes care of it, befriends it, and eventually rides it at some point.
Only scene I remember well at all is some girl (main characters love interest?) puts Aloe Vera on the dragon to treat its wounds at some point.
I read it when I was a kid. Its either a kids book or a teen book. Its not eragon. Been searching for years.

>>686788472
Yeah, I choose that, Its an incredible book, one of his best in my opinion. Very rarely does a author make you feel nostalgic of a time you never lived in.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I'd have liked it a lot more without that romance sub-plot and instead focused more on the whole war on God aspect and if it was more adventurous with the whole multiple worlds idea.

Because it points out how important it is to have people in the world who work hard to make things happen, and we'd all be fucked without these people even though many despise the producers for having what theyve worked for. It's a testament to hard work and self reliance.

Wool (Silo) is a post apocalyptic series where humanity clings to life underground. It's similar to Metro in that respect. Both bring up the concept of living vs. survival and what it means to live when the world around you is dead.
