The game is supposed to have 18 000 000 000 000 000 000 planets in it. That's an 18 followed by 18 zeros. So lets say every star in the game has 10 planets. That's still 1 800 000 000 000 000 000 stars. If we say that each galaxy is on average the size of the milky way containing 100 billion stars (100 000 000 000) and we do some simple division, we have 18 000 000 galaxies in this game. That's 18 million galaxies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2G8w-GB05Q

The goal is to get to the center of the starting galaxy. So it only seems natural to assume that there is intergalactic travel. And if you can travel intergalatically, that makes getting to the center of the universe a kind of inconsequential point. So it doesn't seem much of a stretch to come up with the idea that once you get to the center of the galaxy you unlock intergalactic travel. Sean Murray has dropped hints about this. I forget which video I saw him say this in but he said something very close to...

You think the game is on one scale, then suddenly you pull back and you realize how much grander it is

Not an exact quote, but that's essentially what he said. Besides, it kind of makes sense just from a gameplay point of view. You take all this time, traveling all this way. The reward is a hyperdrive that allows you to travel just about anywhere instantly, including other galaxies. I think that make sense. Because what if you want to go back to a world you found near the beginning of the game. Do you have to make the long journey back step by step? Unlikely. But of course, this is all just speculation.

Just curious what u neckbeards think.

Buying the hype this hard.

Maybe. He said that he wants to incorporate customization in order to make people not feel the need to mod as much as he's worried it may break the game due to how it runs. >>

Right after launch they're gonna get a huge amount of complaints about people not being able to play with their friends and whatnot. So they will probably just add some kind of party/buddy system once you reach the centre of the main galaxy.

I thought it was the opposite. I remember them saying they wanted to have a "breadcrumb" thing going on where you could see what people left behind on planets.

He also said it doesn't matter because it will be almost impossible to find any other people due to how large the planet is. I think he said it was something like a 2% chance of ever running into anyone if 1,000,000 people were always on and you played every day for 100 years

It looks pretty cool in theory. The only problem I have is that even though there will be an almost endless amount of planets to explore the plants/animals/scenery will probably start getting reused if you explore enough. They may be able to use an algorithm to generate planets with different sizes/climates/orbits etc. but I doubt they could generate different kinds of plants and animals.

Fucking why. If you have well reasoned expectations of something being shit, you should either pirate it or wait for a sale.

If you pirate and end up thinking it was actually worth full price then you can buy it to support, or in case of a 50% sale you can buy 2 copies if you really want to pay full price for something.
>>
>>686742984
Because I want to lmfao.

The way he laid it out was that the world's weren't generated off sine waves like so many games before. It would have made it predictable and allowed some world's to be the same. He uses more of a noise approach. Everything is different. There can be 10 million different types of fish etc. There's like 1 million different ships to pick from and the guns are the same. He just input a bunch of characteristics for say a fish, and it will put out every single different variation of that animal. Same with planets. No planet will be the same. This game in my opinion is going to be like gta, minecraft, fallout, and destiny all melded together.

Same things gonna happen as elite dangerous.

Relatively low advertisement/media coverage (Apart from niches) People will love it at first and hail it as a revolutionary game, then the novelty will wear off after a while as people realize that games that just go on forever aren't fun, and because of the ridiculous scale of the size to the player base, players wont interact all that often. There will be a few hubs of activity, but it will tank and become completely dead in about 8-12 months.

Blood and Wine has alone 3 times the content of most big AAA games for 1/3 cost. And the game is not just big, it's fun to play. I've never seen a game being as shilled as hard as this one is.

The previous game made by these devs was a 2.5D sidescrolling stunt game for on mobile. I'm extremely sceptical that they have the expertise to make something like No Man's Sky something more than a gimmick with pretty pictures. Randomly generating content isn't exactly hard, and they're not the first to use it. For reference, Space Engine does literally the same thing, except without the gamey focus on putting differently coloured versions of Earth animals, and weird robots on the planets.

I think this thing is being overhyped. We know next to nothing about it. And games are defined by their gameplay, not by the seemingly mindboggling numbers a RNG can throw out. And what's No Man's Sky gameplay like? No one knows. This despite the game being talked up in gaming media for ages, now. The most we got was canned video's of someone casually strolling around a planet. Well, whoop-dee-fricking-doo.

I have zero expectations for this, because I haven't been given anything to expect. This looks a whole lot like the Spore bullshit we were sold, and I was stupid enough to buy THAT game. I'm not falling for the same trick twice.

But Spore is a good comparison. It did exactly the same shit. Explore a massive, randomly generated universe. Even the objective of travelling to the core was the same. But what did you DO in Spore? Nothing.

No Man's Sky has every indication of being thoroughly mediocre, if not outright bad.

>>686735186

There is a handful of planets (Desert, Forest, Tropical, etc) that will repeat with randomly generated (crap) life forms. It will definitely get repetitive. Ask people who played Spore and never bothered to "explore" once they realized this.

>>
>>686752705
Spore (and Black & White 2) being shit is what literally killed that passion inside me that got me hype for games.

Honestly, I haven't seen ANYTHING about the potential gameplay of No Man's Sky that looks like it would be engaging. All I'm seeing is a sandbox game that doesn't even have a lot of tools to play with. If it has at LEAST minecraft level of tools then it should at least be okay. But if it doesn't, it's going to need a huge quest system or SOMETHING to actually work toward, because flying around looking at the scenery and mining (so you can fly faster and mine more) will not cut it.
>>
>>686753073

>le ebin downloading meme

Stop listening to industry shills. Yes, pirate numbers are high. But at the same time most of those people wouldn't buy the game, anyway. The last game I pirated as a $60 game that I knew was mediocre, at best, and would receive zero support after release. It entertained me for a few nights, but that's it. I would consider buying it for maybe $6, not $60.

But someone's going to add the numbers up, and say they magically missed out on $60 because if I couldn't pirate it, I would have bought it. Which is bullshit. In this case, piracy is probably the best case scenario, because now at least I can generate word of mouth. Without piracy, this is one of those games that no-one ever hears about, and you can find on dusty shelves 10 years after release.

>advertise game as having infinite diversity
>it can't even replicate Earth

This is the sort of hyping bullshit that pisses me off about the video games industry. If you can't make an ocean world in a game that revolves around the exploration of diverse alien worlds, it's worthless. It's not doing what you're saying it's doing.

"b-b-but we honestly admitted that isn't in the game"

It doesn't fucking matter. Because if THIS isn't in the game, plenty of other things you're forgetting to mention aren't, either. So every planet is just going to be the same, reskinned garden world. Over and over and over again. Oh, it'll have a few minor quirks here and there. But that'll be it. And those quirks will start repeating themselves ad nauseum, too.

If you're making an RNG space exploration game, and you can't do oceans, you need to go back to the drawing board. Period. Or you need to drastically reduce your scope. Or maybe just bank on the autism crowd that's keeping other non-games alive.

But what it's not going to be, is a proper exploration game.
>>
>>686728053
I think once you have explored half a dozen planets and the novelty wears of it will be fucking boring.

Procedural generation sounds so big but under the hood it is just copy paste, over and over and over and over and over and...

I dont get why people keep falling for it

How is this different from MirrorMoon, a game about millions of explorable planets, that is cool for 2 hours and then gets boring?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOHX0ylXka0
At least MirrorMoon has actual stuff to do on the planets. It's a game about exploration where nothing is explained and you have to find out what to do on your own. The puzzles and things that happen on the planets are randomly generated and there are also millions of them. If a player solves a planet's puzzle, he gets to name the planet and everyone else that travels there will see the name of the planet and the explorer's name.
I bet nobody has heard about this game, because the concept is boring as fuck.
On No Man's Sky you also just travel to planets (in a more boring way than MirrorMoon) and then look at things there, right?
Pic related is the cockpit view. All red switches actually do something and let you control the ship. The map is readable too, if you know how.
I don't get the hype for this game

These devs are business men. They want to make money and retire. If people are stupid enough to get conned out of their money I blame the people not the devs. It took me ten minutes of watching gameplay videos and interviews to realize they were lying out their ass. Yet you go on boards and see dumbfucks buying the hype hook line and sinker in droves. That's exactly why games get worse and worse now. You don't have to deliver on the hype to make money. I really can't fault them.

Spore used player created creatures and creatures they created themselves. You arn't completely wrong.

It looks like this game will randomly generate creatures from a very small list of possible components so they will begin to look similar after day 2 of exploring. Nothing mind blowing.

The moon can be locked to your position if you have the right artifacts, but whether that works and how it works is different for every puzzle.

But baiting aside, the concept that there can be an entire universe in your computer is what creates the hype for this game. Once you actually ARE in that position, you will have fun for a few hours and then be bored though.

Did you know there is an actual space exploration game already out there, with better graphics and realism than no man's sky?

This game looks dull and boring, just because it has a lot of places to go to doesn't make it interesting, it's probably 100~ base maps with slight differences kind of like Diablo 3's rift system. Looks really pointless to me.
>>
>>686756757
See, Spore used a system where it downloaded other players' creations and populated your world with it. They shipped some with the game, for people with no internet connection, and those were the ones you were stuck with.

Can't really blame the game for that. The concept was rather good, really. As was the underlying technology. But they wasted it completely on reducing it to some laughably simple kids' game with close to zero actual gameplay. And the gameplay that was there, was incredibly frustrating.

Also, from the SpaceEngine FAQ:

Q: How many real objects are there in SpaceEngine, and how many are generated by the program?
A: The entire Hipparcos catalog of stars, as well as all known extrasolar planets, over ten thousand galaxies, and all of the most prominent objects in our Solar system are included. This adds up to over 130 000 objects. As for procedural objects, there are more galaxies and star systems in SE than exist in reality in all of the observable universe.
