Russians took until September 1945 with thier war and did not reach the mainland. US invasion was planned for November 1945. US led invasion would have still beat the Russians to the island.

So yes, they were "right next door" but history shows that they would not have beat us to the island, given they didn't go there by November of 1945, and that's when we were going to invade.

Instead of using simple logic like "oh, they were right next door, look at the facts of the war. If we are going to think of hypotheticals, then you need to take all things into consideration. One could say "well if Japan had to keep fighting the US too, than Russia could have made more headway". But on the opposite of that, US may have countered by invading earlier or changing thier tactics.

I don't know of any historical evidence that says Russia was going to enter Japan's islands before or at the same time as the United States. I don't know where this notion came from other than "well maybe this would have happened"

The war in Europe was over before the trinity test was finished, we didnt have it when we were still fighting germany. We dropped it on japan because japan was all about fighting until the last man standing. the americans had just reached mainland japan, so it would have took another year or 2 of conventional war to beat japan, and at that point it still wouldnt have been a surrender. Dropping those bombs sped up the war and saved many lives

The difference between the war front in Germany and Japan is thacit America was fighting along side allied forces in the west, and were not as well helped in the east. They were sacrificing a lot of resources.

The reason why Japan was so hard to attack was because it was tiresome to get to mainland Japan. Before the bomb, the U.S. was using the tactic of Island hopping along with bomb dropping to try to get to mainland Japan. This took longer than they expected and resulted in more causalities on both sides.

Its also important to not that before the bomb was dropped there was regular bombings on Japan, many civilians were killed during these military operations.

In essence, the bomb was to be used to shock and awe the enemy into submission. It would initially result in a lot of civilian causalities, but it would prevent even more if Island hopping and routine bombings continued.

Even after the bomb was dropped Japan did not want to surrender. They were so arrogant they'd rather suffer. So another bomb was dropped. This finally sealed their defeat.

Fun fact. Before the bomb was being considered 500,000 purple hearts were manufactured in anticipation of American deaths. Most of those hearts were never issued during WWII and were used for misc. skirmishes or other wars up until 2003.
