Any ITFagos here? I installed the SSD on my laptop with Windows10, start up/general performance etc improved a lot but the last week or so the whole laptop sort of freezes with any kind of hard disk activity. I.e. I open File explorer, it gets the waiting icon for a few seconds before responding, I download a file/trying to save a file in notepad, whatever, save file as dialog comes up but I get the waiting cursor for 5-10 seconds before it responds. No malware or anything, can't find anything abnormal in task manager/disk performance. Any tips?

Your computer has cancer and will be dead in a week.

You should not put aftermarket shit in a laptop.

did you replace the original HDD with the SSD or did you use a DVD drive bay caddy? because the OS should be on your primary drive.

Replaced the HDD, OS is on the SSD now.
>>
is your alignment right?
>>
>>686253278
so to be clear...you installed your OS to your ssd. also you put everything on your old hdd onto your new ssd. when you go to open a file your hdd runs and makes noise?
>>
check your power settings, there's one that can turn off the HDD after a few minutes of inactivity.
>>
>>686254009
SSD came with a data transfer tool, it transferred everything from old C: HDD to the SDD, including the OS and every single file. Then I just took out the old HDD from C: and installed SSD to C:, turned it back on, everything's there. It's been working fine for a few months now, just recently I started getting the freezes. Doesn't make a noise.

are you freezing up completely or just getting shoddy results? is it specific files/audio/video or somewhat random?
>>
>>686254719
No, old HDD is not even connected. Freezes, the file save as freezes, file explorer freezes, file open freezes, browser freezes, anything to do with opening/saving a file. After the freeze is over, the icons at the bottom on the taskbar refresh as well, like file explorer restarted itself or something. Any kind of file.

hmm that sounds like a really specific problem so i'll give you some very general advice, and if that doesn't work i'd hit up samsung support.
check for updates on OS. and also check for updates on all of your drivers, not just your SSD. make sure your old HDD isn't getting recognized (as it's not connected) anywhere on your pc.
>>
>>686255645
OS I updated couple of days ago, no difference. I can check other drivers as well. Funny thing is thou overall performance of laptop is still much better compared to HDD days, apps open much faster/restart is much faster etc. but once I try to save/open a file, it freezes
>>
>>686256229
yeah thats what makes me wonder if its still trying to save to your old hdd somehow. you could try to manually disable your hdd drive under device manager if it's still an option. you'll have to restart if that's even an option so wait until you've updated all of your drivers
>>
>>686257106
He said it isn't connected. The pc knows it's not attempting to save to a different location because it's a clone of the hdd files put onto the ssd
>>
>>686257106
Thanks man, I'll try that once out of the shitter. Is there a good app to check for driver updates? When I look at SSD drivers for example they're dated 2008 or something but when I do "check for driver updates - search online" windows says "you have the lat3st drivers" which seems bullshit. They havent ipdated the driver since 2008??

i understand that but i was making sure OP was on the same page

>>686257616
you could attempt to change your SATA mode from AHCI to IDE like >>686255057
suggested. (don't need a monster cable though, topkek)
>>
>>686251740
Samsung is notorious for adding on BS tools. Use Samsungs website to update the drivers, then go into windows to uninstall its exe tools and its processes that run under task scheduler
>>
>>686258039
>SATA mode
from memory bios doesnt have that option, will have to double check. How about driver updates? Good app for it?
>>
>>686258320
Yeah ok will do. They're on the cd anyway if I need them later
>>
>>686251740
have you performed a chkdsk on the old hdd? you might have bad sectors that you then cloned on to your SSD, you should try a fresh install of windows.

Could be since it's recent;

Some recent update (stealth M$?) has porked your system with paging activity.

SSD has hardware fault

Virus | Malware

Check what's paging into your SSD
>>
Did you do the over provisioning? Thru the life of the disk, sectors are going to fail from frequent flashing, most likely in common cache areas, which is one reason to have an HDD as well as an add, but the over provisioning gives your HDD alternative space for when those sectors cease to function, however that shouldn't be an issue for at least a few years with one of those samsung drives, unless you are doing something stupid like using it for torrenting, which is notorious for frequent cache thrashing. Also, from where did you buy the disk, if Amazon, you may want to make sure it was sold by Amazon, not just in Amazon, because there is hella sketchy fake tech stuff coming out of China via Amazon lately.
>>
>>686251740
Were you running Windows 10 on it before? If not that's probably the problem; hardware doesn't like the OS.
>>
>>686260141

PEBKAC.
>>
>>686260262
Yeah it was on windows 10 before the SSD as well but the reason I switched to SSD was because HDD started failing after an overseas trip with the laptop, assumed HDD got damaged in transit.

That's the thing with data transfer tools.
If you still have all your files on your HDD, format your SSD and install Windows manually. Things will work fine.

Do you still have a HDD connected to the computer and if so are those programs located on those discs? If so the problem might be that the disc has to spin up before the program can proceed. It can be configured from the power settings so that it takes longer without disc activity for the disc to spin down.
