So in western culture we take gender as the biological male and female. However, there have always been cultures around the world within history that accept third genders and those genders are treated differently, usually treated as third class citizens. A prime example of this are ladyboys in Thailand.

This has led many people in the States and Europe to believe in the idea that our genders are mere social constructs, allowing transpeople to switch to the gender they want. An off branch of that is that other people can make up new genders simply because they feel they can.

The problem is, many people do not believe gender is a social construct. It wasn't treated as one until social justice movements said it was. Thus conflict arises.

Personally, I get the idea of trying to make gender a social construct, but I don't see the point. It makes things unnecessarily complicated. It isn't your right to be able to choose a label when you yourself think it is only a social construct and thus doesn't really matter. I get transpeople because there seems to be some genuine biological need to act like the other gender and they've been around since the dawn of man in some form or another. But the rest is special snowflake stuff.
