As we've seen, Bran's mind/soul leaves his body when he wargs. However, his mind was currently located in the vision, and we saw that he was still there when Hodor was doing something other than Hodor-ing in a corner.

Also, if warged, his eyes would have stayed clouded over, rather than just flashing.

Now, I have two theories, I'll post most unlikely one first.

1) There's some kind of magical fate force, like a kind of anti-paradox system, that knows that past Hodor saw and heard it happen, so makes sure that it happens in the future.

2) Bran heard his friends screaming for help, but was unable to warg while in the vision. So, he either implants the the mental conditioning into past Hodor, for it to activate later, or, he uses his connection with past Hodor, to put his bravery into present Hodor. (Note how he doesn't say Hodor once his eyes flash)
