Now, Satanism is like any other 'religion'. There are parts people will interpret as necessary steps to fulfilling their dogma. LaVey threw in some occult and ritual stuff for the whole Occult generational craze that was in full swing at the time.

But it's not only a marketing thing (but largely, let's not forget this religion was compiled by a one-time Carny performer). He put this stuff in there because at the time people had largely been raised in religious settings with rituals, holidays, etc.
