This makes no sense at all. You can still stay with your own limited champion pool to learn when all champions are availables. But you can't try new champions without paying for them or waiting forever.

the only difference is that lol is more newbie friendly, and dota is much slower (as in it has higher cooldowns, more punishing mana costs early on and no summoner spells). Dota is definitely more complex and that's the reason it's not as popular, since the majority of new trending games literally hold you by hand and walk you through them and provide no challenge what so ever, making everyone used to games that are simple and easy.
