Most would laugh and ignore it, a few would be annoyed, and maybe one or two people would cheer him on. Then we'd go back to our discussions.

What strikes me as being monumentally odd is that this isn't the only board where I see this exact kind of thread pop up. Where someone will say "So-and-so isn't the same". I've seen it on /a/, /co/, /mu/, /x/, /gif/ (before /wsg/), /wg/, even /w/ once. And I'm sure these aren't the only boards either.
You'd think that if this many people, all disconnected from each other, on various boards, were noting how much of a change the site has gone through that maybe it would merit looking into.
