Why can I go into a psychiatrist's office and say I haven't been feeling too great lately and I can walk out 10 minutes later with an antidepressant prescription? Shouldn't you try and get to know your patient's mental state before throwing pills at them? A medical doctor won't start treating you for lupus because you claim to have those symptoms, they'll test first because if you're wrong, the treatment could be harmful. I believe antidepressants are the same - they cause more problems than they cure.

One full blown mania episode always implies bipolar disorder type I. At least one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode implies bipolar disorder type 2. Only hypomanic and minor depressive episodes over a period of 1 year or 2 years (don't remember) implies cyclothymia.
