Get the 20 and a shorter barrel, I'be got the youth version my dad got me years ago when I was little. Might sound weird, but it's just so short and compact I find myself loving it as an adult. 20 ga has enough stopping power to put down just about any nig nog dindu, but the penetration is low enough to reduce the chances of collateral damage. Regardless, Remington 870 is a good choice, 12 or 20. Load it with home defense rounds, obviously.

The 12ga 870s are higher quality, definitely the best shotgun in its price range. And the ammo is cheap as fuck, and available anywhere. Either the 12 ga or 20 ga will do well for what you want it for. I have both a 12 ga 870 and a 20 ga Browning. I love them both. I started shooting with the 12 ga around 8 years old or so and the recoil absolutely sucked, but now I'm 5'8 about 140 lb and it is absolutely no problem to unload 100+ shells. Just make sure you find a range to go and get some shooting in before you really need it.

I have a Remington 870 Express Magnum 20 gauge that was bought for me for hunting deer when I was 13. It is a solid shotgun. Definitely easier to shoot then a 12 gauge and more than enough for home protection.

There is a waiting period. You need your license or state ID and nothing more. You can buy ammo when applying for the firearm or when you pick it up.

If you are getting it for home protection; I would suggest buck shot for the first round then slugs for the remainder. That way you don't need accuracy for the first shot and the remaining shots will kill in necessary.

It's a solid shotgun with little issues.

Both slugs and shot - bird and buck - are bullets. I don't care if you don't like it, but they are.

Maybe i just have bitch hands, but i rented a .44 mag revolver at the shooting range one time and it was rather unpleasant to shoot after about 12 rounds, and it was big heavy 8 incher. I imagine a lighter, compact revolver is even more uncomfortable. If its just for target shooting, id go with the 357, not like you need the extra power.
