I have played both sports. Football for 6 and rugby for 4 years.

They are both super fucking intense and injury prone.

Football you are going to get split in half by someone way bigger than you and tou have no choice but to take the hit and hope for the best. I was lucky because i would split the other person for the most part.

Rugby is full of hitting but in a completely different respect. Rucking and making tackles is more skill based and fluid.

I can tell you with 100% confidence that football is more dangerous than rugby. Not only are the hits way more violent but the actual players themselves are built to hit and than repeat.

Think of the biggest prop you have ever seen in rugby and imagine being in a confined space with him for an hour and a half while he tries to basically split you in half.

In rugby you can avoid the giant freaks sometimes and that in itself gives you a chance at safety.
