What you say is not untrue, but should we have remained in Iraq past 2011? Is there any reason to think that the Iraqi government would've been more capable?

At some point, you have to cut your own losses, admit the war was a terrible mistake and get out of there. Sure, we probably have a moral obligation to give support to the Iraqi government after leaving, and we definitely have. But keeping tens of thousands of troops there would only have forestalled the conflict.
