It sucks not having a contract, doesn't it? I mean, I'm a teacher, not a scientist, but we're sort of in the same boat -- doing what we should be doing, but without the full salary pay.

I don't have to go to faculty meetings or union meetings though, so that's kind of sweet. Still, I'd be making almost twice as much if they had me under a contract.

Yeah I was kind of a shit-stain in school myself, so it's kind of funny that I decided to become a teacher. The karma is coming back around, but it's fine. I expected it.

We actually had one student teaching applicant who wanted to come back and complete her internship at our school. The teachers remembered her and apparently she was such an unbelievable cunt that the teachers blocked it.

It's the only time I've ever heard of something like that. I mean, you should probably give someone who you haven't seen in 7 or 8 years the benefit of the doubt, but I guess the teachers were just entirely unwilling to do that because of how much of a cunt she was.

I guess I can understand it, though. I mean, I suppose that I COULD work that many hours a week if I really wanted to, and for a while I WAS putting in A LOT of time planning and organizing and everything, but I quickly realized that I was burning myself out for very little appreciable difference in my student's learning.

If 90% of my students seem to "get it" when I've put in 5 hours of planning, and 91% seem to "get it" when I've put in another 5 hours of planning... I just don't see the point. I could use that time to sleep and be well-rested which, I feel, has more of an impact on my teaching than anything else.

It's really easy to "care too much" as a teacher. I love my students, and care a lot about them, but I need to keep my sanity not just for me but for them too. So, I spend some time planning and then spend the rest of my time doing me so I'm in high spirits, healthy, well-rested, enthusiastic...

That rate is in AUS. I don't know what the prison system is like wherever you're from. Here, it's ugly. I work in a protected unit, high profile perps, the elderly, mostly pedofiles. There's a sickly hostility that permeates the entire facility, officers are usually cunts, perps are always cunts, your peers are cunts. It's not uncommon for nurses to verbally abuse eachother toe to toe. Staff turnover is off the hook, we have more agency staff than gov employees. People come in, stay for a few weeks and then just never come back. I fucking hate it, but nursing jobs are super competitive here since we started importing experienced nurses there's nowhere for me to go, except aged care at much lower hourly rate. Have you considered applying to some other schools? Not sure how it works in the UK, but maybe a private school?

The school I taught at for my student teaching internship was amazing, and I was so sad to leave. I wish they had an opening for me, but it was a pretty small school. It was this cool little high school right on the water and its theme was like aquaculture or whatever. I think my "biggest" class consisted of 17 students? It was awesome.

I teach at a school now that I don't like as much. I don't like the grade I'm teaching, don't really like the school, and it's just altogether different -- classes with like 24 students.

Where you teach can definitely make all the difference, and I know it's not as easy as "oh I'll pick this school to teach at." But I think if you keep plugging away and applying for teaching jobs at good schools, you might find that love and passion for teaching again.

Not to mention there's an element there that's -- and I'm not trying to be condescending here -- but babysitting. They're young kids. You've got to teach them not only how to count and spell but how NOT to put the God damn glue in their mouths.

It's got to be pretty exhausting. I don't know. I've never taught primary school and couldn't even if I wanted to; I'm certified to teach grades 7-12. The 14 year olds are fucking exhausting too. You'd think that you could at least reason with them a little more, but they're so easily distracted...

In the U.S., if you're certified to teach secondary education (grades 7-12), you can teach at any public school of course but you can also teach at private schools and "charter" schools. A charter school is a weird public/private sort of hybrid school where the school receives both public and private funding (from parents, the community, even businesses). They operate under a charter, hence the name.

And then there are "magnet" schools and vocational schools. The first school I taught at (the aquaculture one) was technically a vocational school, but it was a magnet school essentially. Magnet schools are public schools that have a certain theme or something, like theater, the arts, business, etc.

So there are a lot of different options here in the U.S. You can teach at a public school, private school, charter school, magnet school, vocational school...

In my experience, the vocational/magnet schools are the places to teach. The students are more driven, more motivated, they kind of WANT to be there, and they're still public schools so you still get all the benefits of being a "government" employee.

I know there are private elementary schools and things like that, and I imagine that anyone certified to teach young kids could teach at those places as well.

It's not a bad gig, but my wife and I want to buy a house soon, and this isn't really cutting it for those kinds of expenses. I've been in retail for years, but Target has very restrictive promotion requirements, so I'll likely never move to a salaried position, which starts at 50k/y after taxes.
