i've always found it interesting the way cats do stuff like that. i've never really seen other animals do it quite the same way
i assume they initially tap something with their paw to see how it reacts, and then after that, they touch it for real. sort of like touching the handle of a pan to make sure it's not hot, and then actually grabbing it. it causes that weird double-tap thing they do.
i assume that's the psychology behind that. but i've never noticed anything else do it. the closest other animal i'd say catfish-type biting fish, which will take a nibble of food before actually biting it
