Economists actually don't necessarily make more money than an intellectual in any other field. Economics is very important because everything is driven by utility, by costs and benefits. Somebody has to study the laws that apply to that.

I never called myself a mathematician. However math is the language of economics.

Economics is driven by Human Action. The economy is just the actions of millions of people producing and consuming goods and services. If you try to represent economics as mathematical equations with laws akin to physics, you will fail.
Economics has more to do with the fields of psychology and philosophy than math.

That is also true. But if you assume everyone is trying to maximize their utility the math actually does work out. In the macroeconomy, I totally agree that there is a lot of work to be done.

But in micro, you might be surprised how well the mathematical models actually apply when individuals are making choices. That has been shown in natural data but also in lab experiments. It's actually really cool.

I'm not OP, just an average retard, but let's try. 2*y(x-1) is already a derivative, right, so the antiderivative of it would be (x-2)xy + C. now what the fuck to do with that, I have no idea

You can also look at joint degree programs. Additionally, PhDs in CS aren't very common unless you want to do research/teach in the field. A Masters might work for you with the math phd. Many of my math profs were very competent in comp sci as well and didn't seem to need the additional degree to do work tangentially related to comp sci.

applied math is science, which is air, light, water pollution, antibiotic resistance, surveillance, genetic engineering, endless drone warfare, nuclear war, and, as Hardy said, pure maths is even more useful than applied. so you're not in a bubble of blamelessness

>>
>>683606066
u retard. atomic bomb first crested with physics and mathematics, they complement each other so they are equally to blame
>>
>>683606370
Bot OP, but let's explain it in a less technical way.

Imagine we have a function. Now imagine we have a point somewhere on the function. If I place an interval around that point, like a little ball or radius, we're still somewhere in the neighborhood of that point, right? Now let's make that radius a little smaller. Then a little smaller. Until our radius essentially only includes our point and its neighbors. So as we trend closer to the point, our limit essentially reaches that point.

Would do the proof itself but on mobile.

Hardy was a great guy but there are some branches of math that (at least for the foreseeable future) are too unrelated to anything else to offer applications. Case in point: as far as i know cohomology of groups could at best only serve as data used to encrypt something because of how it leads to a sequence (probably a known one at that)
Pure mathematics is probably the most detached from ethics
>>
>>683603236
Fourier transforms work on the principle that sines and cosines of different frequencies are linearly independent from one another. They can be used as a basis set to describe any periodic function. Every periodic function can be represented as a sum of sinusoidal functions with different frequencies and phases.

The inner product allows you to easily determine the projections of a function onto its sinusoidal basis. In physics we call it "Fourier's trick." You multiply the function by the basis you want to project it into, then integrate that over all the space (inner product). This returns the value of the projection.

Yes this is a brain bender, and you need to do some serious studying and digger to understand, don't give up.

Try this link: http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/705096/why-is-this-allowed-fouriers-trick-finding-the-coefficients-in-a-fourier-s
