You could easily start playing wow now, but a few words of advice.

1. Avoid veteran players while learning/leveling though the game. They've done it a thousand times and have gotten all the flavor and fun out of leveling already so they try to just get though it as fast as possible and will probably suggest you do the same. Ignore them and just quest though zones. It's where the real value of WOW is hidden.

2. Don't look anything up mechanically if you can avoid it. The game has a built in tutorial system that highlights new systems (specs, talents, new spells, etc) as they become available to you. I'd suggest against trying to figure everything out before you get there.

3. At level 20 go and get your riding training, this will let you get on a mount and cruise around faster, you'll appreciate this. Trust me.

Nah, it's not too late. Although, that said, the game has lost it's initial feel of, well, community. When I first started playing it was... surreal; a feeling of friends scattered across the world playing together to accomplish what at times felt impossible. I remember raiding with my guild wiping over and over on the same boss phase, and the feeling of accomplishment washing over you as the boss finally dies. Let's face it. Tbc was the best expansion no matter what, gathering people to quest or do instances. Guilds being a guild and not a title under your name where nobody even knows who you are.
Wanting to level up to get your mount. Waste all the gold you gathered from 1 to 60 for that epic mount. Frind 3 months for that nether drake. Arena.. wotlk was for me the last good expansion. Maybe too casual but i liked the gameplay.
The stats. Paladins stacking intelleft just spamming flash heal.
I liked spamming the same skill and switching quickly from targets or removing debufs or bufs. Same goes for dps. I hate how wow brought real rotations into it. When is the last time you went to a summoning stone and got a party to an instance. Walking 20 minutes to the instance while sniffing the vibe of the game and discovering all these little things.
If there is an easy way to do things. Ofcourse i will go that route, even though i can choose differently. It's human nature. This game is dead and i played it since beta. Go fuck yourslef those who started playing since cata don't know shit.

I do think you'd get a chance to have your cake and eat it too, with a vanilla server. People can have one char where they enjoy questing and levelling, and one end game account, since regular WoW is basically all end game now anyway.

It seems more like a throwback to Wotlk than TBC imo. Wotlk (and even more so, pandaria before it) actually had a new land that genuinely felt like a new land to explore.

I do think they made Draenor a tad hard to navigate on foot sometimes, but clearly, reading between the lines they acknowledge that flying mounts was a mistake.

ahhhh I miss my affliction lock in WotLK, but I missed so much of my youth in that shit, not again.
