I became state qualified in NC but I moved to CA soon after. I served a small community/county and saw several kinds of patients.

You will see the sick, usually geriatric, addicts, car crashes, random accidents... in only 72 hours of ride-time I saw 2 people code in front of me. You might spend a fair amount of time waiting at the base. You might spend a fair amount of time out helping people.

San Diego should be busier than where I trained and learned to be an EMT.

95% of the stuff you do on the truck is bullshit sick calls or transfers unless you run 911 in a high traffic dense area. Rural is fun but stretched out, we use to run to calls an hour out from base with directions like take a left at the red truck a mile from mile marker 187.

Charting sucks, learn to stay away from the word ambulate if you want insurance to pay out, or don't like i did for a couple of shitheads .

People die, and most of the codes you will run are going to be an uphill battle from the start, and if you stay on the coast get used to delivering obnoxious amounts of naloxone. Take it in stride, had one death and one call in 5 years that truly stuck with me. A 13 year old suicide and a 65 year old lady who's transfer doctor didn't tell her he was transferring her because he found a massive brain tumor on her scan. She asked me why she had to go downtown and i didn't know what to tell her...

TLDR: you're just as likely to save someone with a fully stocked ambulance as an afghan civilian in a pickup truck would, they call it the golden hour for a reason.
