Got my Ph.D from FSU in Criminology about 4 years ago. I did my masters thesis on this very subject. Serial killers still exist, but to be prolific it requires more finesse than it used to because of target hardening, social media, and camera phones as well as the news media/society at large clearly just not giving as much attention to fear-mongering serial killers and their predatory behavior. Serial killers by nature are hard to find, if they weren't they would not be serial killers. In all honesty, about 90% of all murders are due to acts of effective aggression (alcohol, anger, jealousy) rather than instrumental (terrorism, spree shooters, hitmen), or predatory (serial rapist, killer).
