I killed a friend last year. We'd gotten into a nasty fight over the phone and I hung up on him, telling him not to contact me again until he got his head on straight. A year later I got some email from him saying his wife had left him and taken the kids, that he was homeless and living out of his car, and that he wanted to come and see me, and maybe crash with me for a while. Then he killed himself.

I can't fix it. I can't make it better. A friend turned to me in crisis and I turned my back on him. I used to think I was a decent person, but he forced me to recognize that I am a horrible excuse for a human being. I will have to live with this for the rest of my life. Ironically, our original fight was over him accusing me of being a bad friend. And it turns out he was right.
