In theory, you could create a machine that powers itself and runs forever, but it wouldn't be able to perform work on anything but itself, and there'd have to be 0 loss in heat energy and 0 friction. There would also have to be no other forces acting on it, like gravity pulling down and causing friction on moving parts.

-There's a difference between truly perpetual (i.e. infinity) and "so long that humans will be extinct before it stops", with the latter being much more achievable.

-More importantly, what you actually DO with the perpetual machine. It's not impossible to design some kind of eternally-spinning or turning contraption, but what is the point? If you want to extract USEFUL work out of it, then you're taking energy from the machine - which means that you'll eventually make it stop since it doesn't have infinite energy.

What we really want is a perpetual easy-to-tap energy source, which while not conclusively impossible, has no progress just yet.

It comes down to preservation of energy.
