This is an unfinished job, but long story short, what you got to do :
• Limit your number of colors at the maximum. 10+ shades of red is not okay. This version is 10 colors + transparancy
• Add as many details as you can within the limits of your palette
• Training at normal art, be it traditional or tablet-digital would help you with the bodies. Starting off with pixel art may not be a good idea

Working on sprites is before anything a work on economy ; you want them to put the less possible strain on the machine's memory, so you use as few colors as you can. All my sprites use palettes of 21 colors + transparancy here green)

If you are on photoshop when you start a new picture :
Image > mode > indexed colors > other
You make your palette according to the colors you will use in your sprites. If you want the game to work on old engines, like a NES or something, you have to be assured the colors are used for all the sprites, including backgrounds, HUD, this kind of thing.
256 colors is very few so you have to use them wisely. What I do is usually 4 shades of each colors I intend to use - 4 shades or orange, 4 shades of pink flesh, 4 shades of black etc.
Not only it gives less strain to the engine, but also it allows for easy-as-fuck recolors
