OP get a handgun. A shotgun is nice and all but it'll be awkward to get around corners in such a small space, plus they hold a lot less ammo. For the sake of replying to OP - a shotgun with buckshot is very effective. Buckshot has good penetrative power and has a good spread. Don't shoot huge calibers or slugs inside, you'll shoot through your exterior walls and into the neighbors house at best - at worse you'll hit someone you love accidentally. Personally I don't have a shotgun, I have a .223 rifle, an AR-10, and a couple of revolvers. I keep a S&W Model 66-2 strapped to my bedpost. A revolver is the best dead-of-night weapon. It's always ready to go and a dual action is literally just point-and-click functionality. No slide, safety or fuss.
