they are pretty bang for buck.
i own one orient and one orient star and the overall finishing is uncomparable to swiss watches with the same price...

the orient star also is extremely accurate, orient states -25s to + 15s but its about -2 so i'm more than satisfied.

I don't really wear this watch ever because its so huge.

I'm planning on getting this watch at some point as I love chronographs and I have a personal connection to someone to which I am reminded of when russia is invoked
mother of pearl is one of my favorite watch faces because I play a stringed instrument and most bows have mother of pearl inlay and the face reminds me of my passion.

>>680646532
Hey OP, I've sold these and other Swiss watches for a few years now. It's a great looking dial, and the box is incredible. But I've always found the strap to be incredibly cheap looking and feeling and it's a bit of a let down to it. I'd swap it out for a nice Hirsch.

I saw a client buy one, as well as Breitling mesh strap to put on it. It looked great. But the bracelet was worth around half the watch again.
>>
>>680654301
Im really pleased with it! Yeah thats the thing i belive its about 350 to get a full service.

Thinking about a panerai next
>>
>>680654301
You shouldn't really be buying an El Primero without knowing about it, and preparing yourself for the expense of maintaining it. Your friend should get a lifetime of use out of it, and have himself a legacy piece to leave to the next generation should he maintain that service schedule!

>I'm so insecure that I want people to judge me positively based on my purchase of an obsolete aesthetic piece of jewelry under the guise of "functional technology"
>>
It annoys me how people rave about how durable their quartz watches are. Of course they're durable. It's a little circuit and stepper motor inside a machined piece of steel. It doesn't cost much more to turn a very thin and fragile quartz watch into a bullet proof one, you just make the case thicker.

Durability against hard wearing with a mechanical watch on the other hand takes real skill. You've got a tiny mechanical machine running inside, the regulating organ moving back and fourth some 691200 times a day, all day every day, hundreds of components. A good tough watch can be worn doing any and everything, and you only service it every 4 years or so. That's what's impressive.

STP Watch Manufacture facility. Owned by Fossil. Google it. Fossil is a fully fledged manufacturer of manufacture movement pieces, as well as casing up generic movements.

Are you telling me Rolex wasn't a watchmaker before they went all in house? What about car makers, not all of them make the motor inside, but they are still considered to have made their own car. Ralph Lauren started out making ties. He didn't need to make the fabric himself to be able to turn it into an amazing tie. And so by imparting their knowledge and expertise they take something and transform it. You can't wear an uncased ETA.

TL;DR Fossil is a watchmaker

I see these quite often to be honest with you. Not my thing but they are meant for people who are very familiar with the clock and can just glance at it. No numbers required. Personally, I think it's a little bit pretentious. I prefer Roman numerals though.

If it's your style then why not. Watches in this tier of quality are much for muchness. I've sold these, TAG, Longines, OMEGA, Zenith, Breitling, Oris, Bell and Ross, and had access to Tissot, Raymond Weil etc etc.

It's not to my taste, but that's going to be the deciding factor for you in this price bracket, what you like the look of. Just don't get it wet and expect to change the strap over fairly regularly if you wear it all the time. If you insist on the B&M in the exotic leather each time expect it to cost you a pretty penny each time you swap that strap too! I recommend Hirsch.

It doesn't have a crown, there's no actual need to wear that on the bottom of your wrist.
>>
>>680660038
>>680660359
There's literally nothing he can buy at this price bracket that has resale value. This is also not an issue if he intends to wear it and look after it for some time. Definitely of a quality that he can keep it and maintain it forever.

He could buy second hand and maintain a solid resale if that was important, but a lot of people don't like second hand. Plus it can be just as if not more perilous a market to navigate than the used car

>>680660312
If he wants and likes the idea of Swiss, then Orient is a hard sell against perceptions. These sorts of purchases are irrational, so whatever you can say about the quality etc etc won't sway most if they haven't heard of the brand, or don't like the idea of buying a cousin of Seiko.
>>
>>680660359
well if you intend to sell it off at some point, baume et mercier's, new tag heuers and longines to name just a few are very hard to move because there is almost no demand for them or you'll get next to nothing.

There's no demand because the watches are discounted heavily at point of sale. So the takeaway here is not to pay full retail and bargain hard. In my local market you can get these brands at around 20-25% off the marked price.
>>
>>680660928
well buying from a trustworthy used dealer is key, or just save a little longer, because I don't think it's not going to be his last watch, he should rather save for a good timepiece than 3 mediocre ones.

Access to a quality used dealer depends a lot on his location.

And what is considered a good watch depends a lot on his means. I've sold watches like this to people who considered it as a really good watch, and wouldn't probably consider ever having to upgrade or need another.

I've also sold these to people giving them to their kids for their 18th birthdays, only to turn around and buy them an OMEGA when they turn 21. It's all about perspective.

But the steel is just the same as most any other steel watch (bar Rolex). The movement is a workhorse and easily serviceable. Perfectly good watch to keep!
>>
>>680661584
TAG is doing all sorts of stuff. And in doing so are going further and further from their core identity. Though it's not as if they hadn't sold out long ago anyway.

of course between mid tier and luxury like longines.

If you don't mind used ones some omega de ville of sorts
or if you maybe are open to a german watch a nomos ludwig (inhouse movement), they are pretty decently priced even new

you could of course also consider an oris, as their design is pretty original
>>
>>680663236
Not Constellation owner. But I've had a good hands on with all of these except the Bullhead.

Constellation can be a bit "elderly" in appearance. Depends on your style. Mark II is fantastic, if a bit thick. Consider also a refurbished old one? The racing orange and grey dial is the one to go for. Don't get the Spacemaster. They don't sell. One of their ugly ducklings, and no turning into a swan later on is what I suspect. If you want a cool quartz, look to the Breitling Professional series. Aerospace Evo II is great.

I don't knock anyone for their hobbies and what they choose to spend their money on; me, I like to spend my money on fragrances ("cologne") and I'm willing to spend a pretty penny on real nice, unique, complex fragrances.

I just don't understand the whole watch thing. I was shopping around for a "nice" watch and couldn't really tell the difference between a "nice" $500 watch compared to a "nice" $1500 watch.

If it's a status symbol, then nothing short of a Rolex or Cartier will do, right? And if everything else falls short, then why bother?

I ended up buying a $70 watch -- Kenneth Cole. I just like the way it looks. It tells me the time and the date, and that's enough for me. I don't know. I don't get it.

It's not so much a matter of of whether you can or can't pull out your phone, but a question of why would you want to? You strap the watch on, and the time is on the back of your hand. It's so much quicker to look at and check the time compared to fishing it out of your pocket and lighting it up to check and then sticking it back.

As someone who spends their money on something so fine, with so many complex subtitles, shouldn't you be exactly the kind of person to understand why people would love to collect fine timepieces?

How many people outside of your general interest contacts would know the first thing about fine fragrance beyond "I like that" or "I don't like that". They could tell you if it was fruity, floral, spicey, woody etc, but it stops there.

You probably know a lot about fine fragrance, but you didn't just know. You committed yourself to exploring what it was about, learning. And the same goes for watch enthusiasts. It takes some time and research to be able to build up a body of knowledge that lets you appreciate the differences, subtleties, and be able to discern value at $50, all the way through to $50000 and above.

It's not a real watch brand. Gant have got no business making watches. They wouldn't have even designed the exterior. The manufacturer would have prepared a few options and let Gant pick what they liked.

When I buy anything from anyone, I tend to only buy products that are a part of their core competency. So in your case I would have put it towards a Casio, Timex, Swatch, Seiko, Citizen or the like. Not a fashion brand who also peddle watches. But each to their own.

>>
>>680661270
Stock tickets. Seriously all the stock market apps suck on smart phones I can only imagine there's nothing for watches. Opening closing bell, news alerts, price changes
>>
>>680665537
Well that's exactly the thing and sort of what I was getting at. I feel like I should get it, but I don't.

An expensive fragrance might be handmade, limited in quantity, contain expensive ingredients (such as ambergris), and the difference in price makes sense. $70 for an off-the-shelf fragrance. An extra $100 or $150 for a more exquisite fragrance.

But with watches I feel like even when you take into account all of the subtleties in movement and styling, the difference in price between watches, even comparable watches, is still insane and it doesn't make an awful lot of sense to me.

>>680666251

>>680666448
But you can find that level of intimate involvement in the manufacture of watches if you want. If you're looking at Rolex, you're dealing with a brand that make in excess of 1 million pieces a year and an inflated price and demand due to carefully controlled supply. But you then look at a brand like Zenith. First brand in the world to unite the skills to create a watch, case, movement, dial and all under the one roof for one business. Most awarded Swiss watch brand. Their significance to the industry has been so great that their original factory is world heritage listed. As a brand they make <30 thousand pieces a year, and they are all hand assembled and decorated. So depending on what you consider to be special, you'll find a brand that has approached the art of making a watch in that way. You just need to commit yourself to finding them.

>>680666843
It's hard trying to do this. Depending on the end links, it may be very very hard to find a watch it will even fit on. The width of the band will whittle down a lot of your choices.

I also doubt it's 22K. It'd be awfully soft, wouldn't last. Generally you can by 18K gold watches but not more than that. What's its origin? You might be able to find an example second hand of the watch that your band belongs to, hopefully with the band in really bad condition. Watches in solid gold case and bracelet depreciate like crazy because the bracelets start to deteriorate and flex very quickly if worn regularly. So by the time it comes to sell, most buyers consider having to service it, as well as replace the bracelet.

Incorrect. Steel bands don't really add much to the price compared to leather/rubber options. But precious metal bands add huge bucks to the cost of a watch. You compare the price of a Breitling Navitimer in 18K gold. Price of the Navitimer bracelet in gold is like 2x the cost of the watch head on its own.
