I leave him alone mostly. I feed him once a week, and look at him. I've handled him a bit, and he doesn't mind at all, but really they're delicate little creatures so you shouldn't pick them up or anything since you risk seriously hurting them. Most new world species are very hesitant to strike and will more likely kick hairs if threatened. It's also very easy to read their body language, so you'll know when they're agitated and when they're calm. Best way to get over your fear of spiders is to own one as a pet. You'll realize very quickly that they're chill little dudes that don't wanna hurt nobody.

Temp difference isn't just 2 degrees. Goldfish shouldn't even be in an aquarium. Your common feeder will grow to about a foot long, and is a popping machine. Needs at least 100+gals alone, and had a longer lifespan if it's water temp is kept around 72. You want to keep fish at the median of their temp range, not the extreme. The dude was right to tell you no. Also, specific temp hearers are far better than those crap auto set ones. Generally break and get stuck in on, cook your fish.
