The writers went on to work in The Collector, the best slasher of all time, and 11.11.11, the worst thriller of all time. I don't know about unrelated recs, though. I guess Death Note offers the same cat-and-mouse deal, but it's not a movie.

Why wouldn't I think so? The game in the prologue makes no sense in terms of proving a social point or being a personal revenge for John. We never get explanations on who set it up or in which time of the timeline it happened. It was literally a scene made so the trailers would look good (Wow! A game out in the public!). it's another game in which at least one person must die, which always diminish John's credibility, and the resolution with the two dudes killing the whore was incredibly adolescent.
Being marketed as the first slasher in 3D, the film is full of popcorn flashy moments who are way too wacky for the overall tone of the Saw saga, like the stupid dream sequence or Linking Park being stars. Showing John with a gangster hat just completes my belief that the film must be some kind of joke or satire against all the previous Saw movies.
The writing is also a mess - The long awaited return of Dr. Gordon is unexplained (how was he convinced to help Jigsaw? No time for explanations, it must be the final twist!) and his character doesn't even keep his old personality, with the actor showing a new accent. Also, the ending shows two hooded helpers and we never learn who they are, unless you go to interviews and realize they are the two kids from the start. What sense does that make? Don't ask me. The whole movie is ridiculous, and you can't even blame it on the franchise being tired, because the previous one had been one of the best ones.

I see. Well, I think that yeah, you're mostly right, but at the same time there are a few explanations. I was unaware that they were the two kids, and yeah, it doesn't make much sense, but can be changed in VIII(If it gets made) fairly easily. WIth Gordon, yeah, the accent was an acting thing that CLEARLY got too overlooked, but Gordon's allegiance to Jigsaw is fairly easily explainable- Stockholm Syndrome combined with "seeing the light" in the same manner of Amanda(There is a sequence with John picking him up and carrying him, helping him recover, fitting him with a prosthetic limb, etc.). Though I will admit, as interesting as the opening trap was(yes, it was flashy bullshit that did absolutely nothing for no reason, but it was interesting flashy bullshit), it can, again, be explained through a possible theory of the SAW universe- Each time Jigsaw created a "survivor," they became indoctrinated into his ideology. That particular trap had no meaning for John, as it wasn't planned or created by him, but rather, a disciple who took issue with the three's actions. Discredits John's original ideology, fuck yeah, but this isn't John we are dealing with in this case, just a follower who may be misinterpreting the original ideals. With Linkin Park, yeah, that was some bullshit. 3D wacky moments? More bullshit. Overall? Yeah, worst of the series, most def.

Well, this kind of movies can't be rated as serious films. I think they are just as good as the Saw movies, though. Most scenes are just excuses for gore, while you have the underlying thriller-y plot that gets more complex in each movie. Each movie starts the second the last one left off, being a single narrative, like Saw. I think they are good entertainment. If you played the games you get some fan service like sequences being frame by frame choreographed after the game cut-scenes, too.
