in the UK, as a private soldier as soon as you get your first stripe and promoted to L/Cpl you're commanding a 4 man fireteam/section 2i.c, get your second and you're commanding an 8 man section. Everyone needs to be able to do the job of the rank above them as you've pointed out.

You've gotta be flexible on tours too, I did long barrel support to CP teams, recces etc.. too.
