Part 1

The pencil tapped against the desk. Mary, only paid slight attention to her professor. It wasn’t so much that she was uninterested in the material, but more so that she felt totally unchallenged in this class. She was no genius, she was fully aware of her abilities and her standings in this college. It was more that this was another stepping stone, as her parents beat into her the need for a higher education. Get the education first, then the job, then the money. Somewhere in that ambitious plan her parents set before her, was her own interests and goals. Not that it mattered much anymore. They had died several years before and she was plenty well off.

Maybe, just maybe, she wondered, if she was really just bored. Absently she brushed her blonde hair behind her ear, her mind wandering to the past, her present totally forgotten. Just before her parents had died they had purchased a small house only a block away from the college. Heaven forbid she actually could enjoy the full college experience. “Dorms are too distracting. Drinking and sex. Not enough studying.” Her father would say. Her mother, always the submissive one, would just nod in agreement.

She could have sold the house. She could have pocketed the money and moved into the dorms. But, in the end, she didn’t. It was easier to just follow the path of least resistance. Her personal life was just as planned out, only because that was just how she was raised. She hadn’t thought of lashing out, it wasn’t done. College had loosened her up a bit though. Occasionally she would end up at a party, but never ended up as one of the girls making a walk of shame home. Mary was much more careful. If she took an interest in someone, they ended up at her place. More than once the evening delight ended with the man walking home with bruises. None had attempted a second night with her. Maybe it was her clinginess, maybe it was her rough nature in bed. She didn’t know, nor did she care enough to find out.

It was several years ago that PETA launched their offensive. Mary was in high school at the time. She only briefly heard about it. Current events usually ignored in favor of school work. Fluffies were an anomaly to her. They were expensive and rare. Even still. Not as expensive now, but still quite rare, especially the feral herds. She always wondered what it would be like, conversing with a toy. Was it like talking with a typical A.I.? She shook her head, her past fading away, her present in focus again.

As the semester crept along, feral herds had finally made their way to her college town. Slowly, it became a competition of sorts between the frat houses to see which could get the most fluffies and murder them in the most creative ways. Even the sorority houses joined in. Rumors started circulating that future hazing was going to include giving “special huggies” to pregnant mares. While that piqued her interest, Mary didn’t suspect any frat house would let her in to watch.

It was the weekend on the peaceful spring day that changed things. Mary sat in her living room, her toes wiggling as she read. She never read for fun, it was always studying for her. Mary didn’t have many people over to her house. Never had the need. Never made many friends. It didn’t bother her any. The house was small and sparsely furnished, only the bare necessities. The book left open on the couch as she propped her feet on her coffee table, which also happened to be her dining room table. From her vantage she could see the yard and street beyond. Color. Unnatural color. She blinked and rubbed her eyes. It had disappeared. She bounded out the front door, shoes forgotten. Barefoot, Mary ran around the house, and much to her surprise a small herd of wild fluffies had wandered past her open gate.

Mary stood, mouth agape. It was her first sight of fluffies. All accounts second hand, all images just fleeting pictures on the internet. Suddenly, in front of her, a herd. A wild group of fluffies. A walking, talking, breathing, eating, shitting group of toys.

“Dis wand fwuffy wand nao. Dummeh hoomin gif wand to Smawty an hewd.” The yellow fluffy with the horn demanded. His cheeks puffed up as he glared at her. “Gif nummies an wand!” She could only smile. They were so cute!

Mary took stock of the herd as she closed the gate behind her. The self-proclaimed smarty had a horn. Of course, she thought, a unicorn. There was a Pegasus as well. The two others were normal, as normal as a fluffy could be, no horns or wings. One, she surmised, was a female as there were several tiny chirping fluffies on her back. Why they chirped, she had no idea. As any self-respecting female, Mary had a love of horses as a child. Every chirp grated on her nerves, it was so unnatural.

She took a step forward, the entire herd took a step back. “Aren’t you guys just the cutest?!” She knelt down and held out her hand, “c’mere.” The smarty looked back at the herd, a look of triumph across his face as if he just tamed the girl.

Cautiously he took a step forward towards Mary. “Hoomin gif nummies? Hewd bes hewd. Nee nummies.” His speech irritated her even more than the baby chirps.

From a young age she learned how to force a smile that seemed quite genuine. This time, it took all her effort to keep from grimacing. “Sure, you little cutie.” Tentatively she reached out and stroked his dirty yellow fluff. Even filthy and unkempt, his fluff was soft. Both hands reached around his midsection and she lifted him into the air. She was curious, oh so curious. It mumbled complaints as she turned him about, her eyes taking in the first fluffy she ever encountered.

“Wan downsies or gif sowwy poopies!” More demands fell on deaf ears. His threats meant nothing to her, she didn’t even know what, she guessed, sorry poopies were. It didn’t take long for her to find out as he lifted his tail and a burst of shit covered her bare feet.

Mary screamed. The smarty screamed. The herd scattered. Mary dropped the fluffy into the pile of shit, a loud squish and crack quickly covered by the fluffy screaming about worst owies. Her vision went red, her curiosity replaced with silent rage. Her face went deadpan as she knelt down.

“Huuuu! Wowst owies! Weggies owies!” The smarty rolled about trying to hug his fractured leg, his own shit matting in his fluff as he rolled about.

“Too loud.” Her hand gripped the mane and shoved his muzzle into the pile of shit. She could see small bubbles form as she held his head down. His eyes went wide as he struggled. His legs flailed as he tried to fight back. He was no match for a human. His eyes were locked on hers. Slowly, bit by bit, Mary watched the light leave his eyes. His body limp in her hand.

It was oddly satisfying, the control, the power over another creature. No, not a creature. Not alive. A toy. She simply turned it off. She found the remainder of the herd forming a small shaking fluff pile against the fence.

She grabbed the plain fluffy, the one without babies. She ignored the crying, the pleading. Mary was surprised to find that their fluff was rather absorbent as she used the fluffy to wipe off her feet. As it cried in her hands she snapped it’s neck, letting it drop to the ground. The remaining fluffies watched in horror, only chirping from the babies came from the pile now.

“Nu hewt fwuffy…” The Pegasus mumbled as she picked it up. She turned it over, him over. She turned the Pegasus back over and held him gently, petting and reassuring him.

“Begging is unbecoming.” Her fingers traced his wings, curiously lifting and feeling the feathers. It was certainly interesting. Just how much pain could these things comprehend? One by one, she plucked the feathers from his wings. Mary couldn’t stop herself now. Two bloody stumps stuck out from the back of the screaming fluffy.

A neighbor peeked over the fence, before he could ask he saw the fluffies. “Good luck with that.”

She smiled at him as she snapped the neck of the Pegasus. “Thanks!” It was thrilling. She had full control over these little creatures, their entire existence. This was just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. While she wanted to save these for later, she just couldn’t contain her sadistic joy any longer. She reveled in it, bathed in their blood, their suffering.
