I can get an Anderson lower for like $50 and then probably buy a cheap PSA upper and make babby's first AR.
Then again my LGS does have a pretty nice Spike's Tactical rifle with some cheap brand red dot for like $800.

You're wrong. Here's why. 400-500 yards is a long ways for a .224 diameter bullet. Many hunters shoot 50g to 55g 22-250 bullets at about 3800 fps to get flat shooting and very short leads on game. These are tops inside 300 yards. However, the little .224 bullets slow WAY down and begin to drop like a lead balloon after about 300 yards. This essentially means tougher shots and crippled game in the 400-500 yard range. School is in session bitch.

Depends all on powder. At 30 grains it's no worse than a 12 gauge, at 120 it feels like a goddamn .50 cal (because it technically is around there, lol). Standard load for Union soldiers was 60 grains, but that's way more than you actually need to shoot well at a decent distance. At standard 60 it would be around average 7.62 kick I'd guess.

i'd say that 9 out of 10 guys who shoot themselves in the head with a .357 magnum, die. and that 1 survivor would be nothing short of a miracle. 357 is an incredibly potent round, Best Gore dot com has plenty of suicide by guns before/after pictures if you want to see what different calibers do. they had a story on there about a soldier who tried to an hero with a 12 gauge and survived, blew the lower half of his face off in the process.

There's a shit ton of variables there dude, like I said, it probably mostly depends on the caliber and velocity and weight of the round. Also if it's a hollow point or maybe a wadcutter it may do more damage to a skull.... Most pistol rounds will usually just make a hole though, not blow into a million pieces like a watermelon. Suicides with handgun cartridges usually leave the skull pretty intact

They're fun as heck. I highly recommend it one day. They're actually really easy to shoot too, since they're so heavy and have such long barrels you don't really feel most of the recoil. And since the vast majority are ironsights-only, you get good at focusing on a target. They're awesome beginner rifles, though you have to clean them thoroughly and do some yearly maintenance to keep the barrels from corroding and the springs inside the lock mechanism from breaking. Replacement springs aren't expensive, but most were manufactured in the 1860s and they're hard to come by anymore.

The iron sights thing has ruined me though, I can't even use a scope anymore. It's disorienting, I'd rather just iron sight everything.

to be frank, im not sure why some peoples heads explode, and some just kinda ooze. could be how potent the particular cartridge was. some manufacturers make weakened ammo for sensitive shooters or women who want the punch of a 357 but dont want the kick you'd get with a snub nose. at the same time some companies over charge the loads and make above average velocity rounds for things like stopping big game and bear protection. could be barrel length too. the shorter the barrel, the more gas is exploding out because not all of the powder is being burned. so that could have something to do with it too

No, the kick doesn't make you miss, I can shoot very accurately with a .357 at like 50 yards... Flinching probably has more to do with it. Also people usually shoot at their temples for suicide with a handgun.

I know this isn't my topic (musketfag here), but believe me, the powder charge is huge. Just about any rifled-barrel gun has the potential to be accurate to any reasonable range as long as it's built fairly well without defects, it's all dependent on the charge and the ability of the shooter. There isn't much difference technologically between a modern revolver and my musket - your powder and cap are just held next to the bullet instead of being added separately. Matching the powder to your ability and intended use/range is the most important thing IMO when it comes to choosing a round. At least it is in my sport.

back on topic... was 450 a fair deal for a used ruger sp101, its got the lil lazer attachment too, not that it matters... what should my worries be about it being used..

one thing i wondered is if the spool where ammo goes is off by a bit, could hte bullet not go through barrel and make contact with the part where spool meets gun and explode in hand?

This is a concern of it being used, I read that the spools can be sensitive and damaged easily.

It's a cylinder not a spool FYI. A shit to the temple with a .357 at close range is basically a guaranteed kill. A large chunk of the damage comes from the gases that follow the bullet slug and pull matter with them. A .357 would definitely go through a skull, and a good chunk of brain would come with it. Even if you did it at a hospital, they would not be able to do anything. you would bleed out in like 2 minutes if you survived the initial impact at all, too much brain would be damaged
