This was due to scarcity of food and the fact that for as long as modern have been around both males and females have actively invested significant energy into their offspring. While of course women do have to be "picky", men also have to be picky too. In my opinion it is a combination of our past, namely to do with religion, current social status e.g. the lad and the fact to some extent women do invest more into children and thus have more to risk, thus they should be more cautious.
