Of all yours op, I'd the buck. It will take a while to deploy but has a proper lock and clip point, great for slashing and stabbing.

The butterflies are cool, but even super nice ones get broken hinges from time to time.

I always carry throwing knifes for the fact that's I will always have more than one and only will ever need one hand to take it out, plus the added bonus of being able to hit from a distance, if you know what you're doing then they are hands down the best.

Of course, a gun is always better. But again, use whatever you have available. Usually, though, the best defense is to just run. Unless you're in mortal danger and can surprise attack with the knife, escalating the situation after it begins is rarely a good thing. Before it begins, if you can, show the knife to hopefully scare them. But once fists fly, only pull the knife in absolute last resort.

An attacker usually doesn't want your money or life enough to risk theirs, so pulling a knife beforehand can avoid conflict. But if they're already committed or armed themselves, it will only scare them/strengthen their resolve and lead to a more dangerous fight.

I'm the guy who posted the martial arts link, Mr. "Run away if possible." Now, I do carry knives, I carry one sharp knife with a good lock and a decent shape for combat in a worst-case scenario, and one literally $3 Wal-mart knife that happens to have a retarded thick blade. I use it as a tool, and while it would hurt like hell to get slashed with, it's by no means properly sharp. The cheapo knife gets the most use by far, the other almost never leaves my pocket. However; while I do carry a "combat" ready knife, I don't pretend that I'm going to get in a knife fight - I have it just in case, but in the end I'm running if at all possible in that situation. It's just the best way to survive.

If I were to choose an ideal fighting knife, I'd go for a design similar to a Ka-Bar - longish, wedge-shaped blade, clip point, and most importantly fixed blade. There are two things I don't like about the Ka-bar, which are holdovers from its past which make sense as a survival tool, but not a weapon. Those are the tang - they aren't usually full tang (though there are variants). I'd honestly never even consider any non-full tang fixed blade knife for any real use. The other thing I don't like is the serration. It's great for a survival knife and thus makes sense on something issued to field troops, but it's ineffective in a fight and simply hard to keep sharp. But aside from those, a fixed blade, full tang knife of the shape of a Ka-Bar is probably the best possible knife for combat as far as I know.

Now, fixed blades just aren't something it makes sense to carry around. Many are illegal to carry, and there's just the fact that sometimes you just don't want a sheath knife hanging from your belt. It looks awesome while you're running your truck through the mud bog, but your boss isn't going to like it. I have a fixed blade, but it lives on the transfer case shifter in my vehicle and is mostly there in case I roll my Jeep on the rocks and need to cut myself out of my seat belt. For daily use I've found that folding knives are decent, but there are some things to look for:

Straight, non-serrated blade, preferably carbon steel
Solid rivet or screw holding it on
Heavy-duty spring keeping it closed
Comfy handle
Not obscenely heavy

For just a basic-duty tool knife, Walmart is awesome. The one near me has a literal 2-5 dollar knife rack on an endcap. As long as it's cheap, tough, and will hold some sort of an edge, it's fine as a tool. My "fighting knife" is a $15 Smith and Wesson knife from Autozone. I find auto parts stores to be good sources of mid-tier knives like mine. They're good quality and cheaper than the same knife at a camping store.

Also, get a sharpening stone. Walmart is your friend. I use an "Arkansas sharpening stone", which is just a smooth, flat rock. Directions say to use oil, water is fine, trust me. Also, use an old belt to strop it (pretend you're an old school barber with a razor), it knocks off rough burrs.

Almost any folder is garbage for real self defense, the exception possibly being butterfly's due to the double hinge realistically if you looking at melee defense, solid martial arts training > weapon. That being said, stabbing is not really a defensive action.

Knives are tools. It's not a bad thing to be prepared in an absolute worst-case scenario (hence the sharp knife on the right), but the best strategy to survive an attack is to not be a hero and just fucking RUN. Which I've said what, three times now? I explained why it was stupid to think you're going to use a knife for self defense, then explained the ideal knife if you ever were to do it, then described something more realistic (which is what most of the thread also described) and then posted what I personally do as an example. I fail to see how that makes me a wannabe ninja. A redneck I am, but a mall ninja I am not.
